test drive meme 21

NOTE: The locations in this test drive are placeholders and do not fit with current game events. Due to ongoing changes as we shift to arc 3, contents of this test drive as they related to specific areas or activities are unfortunately not able to be incorporated as game canon, though if it is possible for a particular thread, you may assume conversations took place similarly in a different setting once the changeover happens ICly. Test drive threads may of course still be used for application samples!

Ingress travel can be disorienting, but there’s no need to worry! All side effects are temporary and lessen with each trip. Your body may experience several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You may have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. You notice that the area you are in is filled with a soft cerulean light and feels slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you. Regardless of your current state, however, the stress of initial Ingress travel forces your body into unconsciousness.

Waking up is another story. Or maybe it isn’t.

You find yourself in a nondescript room; sometimes with others who have found themselves in the same situation, sometimes alone. A robotic medical tech is always present to explain what’s happened in a rote fashion, though his programming does not permit him to answer specific questions. He provides some clothing, a TAB, and a guide that explains the basics of Ingress travel and why you are here. Outside the room, you'll find you're on a space station that is staffed only by other robots; the only other organics there are those who recently arrived with you, or perhaps your predecessors, who are strolling the halls in search of an observation deck or the tech they've been sent here to fix. Why not introduce yourself and say hello?

phanos

* The planet Phanos is not as it was during the last visit there. Storms of dark energy swirl across the sections of the world, though they do not yet overwhelm it. The temperature is cooler now, but sandstorms still kick up with great frequency, making cooperation an important part of survival as groups make their way across the landscape, investigating the changes. The pyramid forest remains, but the griffins who live there now venture farther down from their nests, and around a third of them have been twisted by the storms' energies into even more aggressive, monstrous versions of what they once were. Do not take one on alone, or it may be your last mistake.

* Inside one of the tallest pyramids, the lab remains intact, and rumors speak of a locked chamber in its heart that contains valuable material—but is that in the technological sense, or does it hold something monetarily precious in the right market? Maybe you don't care and you're just nosy. Either way, the vault is sealed away behind a series of complicated sliding puzzles that have just one catch—they are not possible to solve without two people operating the locking station. Are you here with a friend? If not, better hope the next guy to come along has a sharp mind for this stuff.

[ Puzzles he doesn't necessarily mind. They're convoluted, sure, and time-consuming when a lock sure wouldn't be, but it speaks to the part of him that had begged for and soaked up Atari and Nintendo's bullshit for years before losing...well, almost all of it.

It's like a video game.

Okay, so a pretty poorly designed one, but the principle is always the same. The biggest payout is usually the one hidden behind the most complication and he may as well make something of this disaster. ]

Sure, except for the eyes on the back of my head. Maybe four more arms.

[ Because one: he is not willing to admit this damn thing has the best of him currently, no matter how obvious it is, and two: there is no way in however many hells there actually are in the galaxy that he's outright telling Yondu no. Even if a younger Peter might have. Hell, even if the Peter of a few weeks ago might have. ]

You think you can make something of it, be my guest.

[ He can't just say "hey, it's good to see you again," no. Of course not. ]

[ He fumbles around with it for a moment before the player--still so differently shaped and sized and weighted from his trusty (god, rest its soul) Walkman--and holds it up for a second. She means this? ]

Oh, this old thing? Uh it's--complicated.

[ And yet, still more comfortable to his ego than talking about how he's fumbled this whole puzzle thing so far. ]

Wait, why?

[ Is it not cool? ]

[Kelly Ann is getting the feeling that there’s a lot around this place with complicated stories.]

Oh, I just. [She focuses on the Zune instead of his face tucks a lock of hair behind her ear, feeling a big awkward.] You can’t get one of those anymore. I haven’t seen one in a store in like, five years at least. And sometimes, you know, you just want a dedicated MP3 player that’s not made by Apple. Zune was really the only competitor that was even close. All the others are just crappy little flash drives in a shiny case.

[STOP RAMBLING]

It’s just neat to see one, that’s all. [She laughs, awkwardly.] Hey, what’s going on with that thing on the door? It’s blinking. Is that bad?

Heh. Sounds fair. Doesn't seem very sound business, however.

[ He looks down at the Tab with the music coming from it and he's pretty sure he remembers it. Sounds something classical with that beat. But he shakes his head at her question, breathing a small laugh as he looks around them again. ]

Sorry, I just got here. Though I wouldn't mind a drink myself.

[ Tho less water and more whiskey. Looking back down at her, his brow creases slightly as he takes her in again. ]

Is this your first time off-planet?

[Woah. Okay, that's more than a little odd, but it's also--] Rad, [he breathes, overly sharp canines peeking past the blue of his lips.]

Ah, no, I can't say that I am. Besides, how rude would I have to be to intrude on your business?

[Kurt chuckles, though, raising a hand to cup around his face, like he's trying to stifle the noise. Some people can get offended by such things; Sans doesn't seem the type. Still, one can never be too sure.]

[Leaving his head down has probably kept it from being removed from his shoulders more than once. To be fair, it also gives him a slight upper-hand, should someone decide to actually swing on him while he scrutinizes this way. Erik's never been given reason to attack him, though. (Situation with Apocalypse put aside.)

So, he does know him, but not from his last time at Thisavrou from the sounds of it.]

I can't, [he admits simply, shifting his weight from one foot to the other before settling on them again.] Once you're brought through the Ingress, getting back home is ... difficult to say the least. [Despite his hunkered appearance earlier, Kurt has straightened now, turning to gaze off into the distance at nothing in particular, the spade of his tail twitching with uncertainty.]

I've been here for almost a year now and I have yet to find a way back. One that is a willing participation, that is.

What's the discount rate for putting up with your snoring for months?
skelepun: ([sans] 33)

[personal profile] skelepun 2017-09-30 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, so much for sleep. Sans cracks an eye socket, grin unchanged and yet somehow warmer when he sees who it is.]

That's a surcharge, actually. [Straightening up, Sans rolls his shoulders with a satisfying crack.] Those are private concerts, you owe me like 10,000G.
neveroutwrenched: (pic#8815178)

[personal profile] neveroutwrenched 2017-09-30 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah well, you'll have to put it on my tab.

[Ratchet moves to sit down next to Sans, elbowing him in a silent bit to 'move over'.]

So...anyone ask how much you charge for the answer yet?
skelepun: ([sans] 34)

[personal profile] skelepun 2017-09-30 07:00 am (UTC)(link)

Matt Holt | Voltron: Legendary Defender

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-14 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Heck yeah, puzzles! Matt loves puzzles. He was always the best at them, even when they took literal hours to complete, requiring all his skill and concentration. He was a...very socially awkward child, okay, and puzzles don't judge you for being a nerd.

It doesn't take him too long to realize that these aren't one-person puzzles, though. Someone has to touch there and press here and slide this bit and one human doesn't have that many limbs. Most aliens don't have that many limbs. Still, he'll quietly make a fool of himself for a bit, running back and forth to try and beat the system until he's panting softly, out of breath.

Help him.

[Puzzles, FUCK YEAH! Except someone else seems to have beaten Pidge to the punch here, which makes her frown a little bit as she approaches... until she notices the way they're frantically running around to solve the thing. Her brow furrows slightly and she squints at all the things he's moving around, already trying to figure out what the deal here is.]

I think... you might need an extra set of hands there.

[Space armor is great for regulating temperature. Even in desert climates. Which is why he's suited up, helmet and all. Slowly investigating the pyramid structure. Holding his hand aloft like it's a flashlight.]

[Which it. Kind of is. In this situation.]

[The sound of someone scrambling around gets his attention, and he pauses, turning to the nearest room out of curiosity.]

You okay in there?
theotherholt: (smitten)

come 2 my bosom!!!

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-17 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Matt's a little breathless under the helmet -- he's fit! He's in shape! He works out, damn it! -- as he skids to a halt, one hand holding up one bit of the puzzle while he stretches his foot over to try and step on another.]

Hands and feet both, yeah. You volunteering?
theotherholt: (what the what)

oh hey thurrr

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Space armor is exhausting is what it is. Matt doesn't know if the pyramid has air, so he's in his suit as well, which is making a not-at-all-cool rasping sound as he tries to catch his breath, leaning against the nearest wall to try and get the special panels to depress long enough for him to figure out the rest of the puzzle. The voice is muffled, metallic, but still somehow cooler than his??? Rude.

Letting out a huff:
] Yup. Peachy.
shiro2hero: (really really tingling)

fancy meeting you here

[personal profile] shiro2hero 2017-10-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[There's something oddly familiar about that huff. Like something he'd hear out of the others when they were faced with something annoying. Or something they should be able to do.]

[The laugh in return is basically instinct -- something honestly amused -- as he steps into the room proper, hand already glowing to light the way.]

Yeah, you sure sound "peachy" all right.

/RUSHES IN

[personal profile] pidge_out 2017-10-17 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
[There's familiarity in that voice, despite the breathlessness and the way the helmet muffles it. Familiarity that, for a moment, strikes her completely dumb in the middle of walking over. Familiarity that makes her pause, just long enough that it's noticeable, while a million thoughts go running through her head at lightspeed.

No way. Is it? It can't be. Can it? What if it is? What if it isn't? People have had soundalikes show up. Lookalikes, even. Just because she thinks she recognizes his voice, doesn't necessarily mean anything. The multiverse offers a million possibilities. A million.

Including maybe it is.

Pidge carefully squares her shoulders as she keeps going, as she gets closer, step by solid step. She's fighting the urge to hold her breath as the gap closes, lowers the sound of her voice so it's a bit less recognizable, even through the helmet of her own armor. She tries to see if she can catch any glimpse of the guy's face from the corner of her eye. His helmet is in the way, but if there's even anything recognizable...]

I'm pretty good with puzzles. So yeah. What've you got so far?
theotherholt: (all sweaty)

what a coincidence wow

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
[The glowing hand gets a headtilt of curiosity, since Matt has his hood and helmet on and he looks like a weird lizard-y stormtrooper. Still, it's neat. Neat glowing hand.]

Heavy on the sarcasm. I'm trying to be three places at once.
theotherholt: (Default)

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
[It isn't, because it never is. Matt has stopped looking for his father, for Shiro, has trained his mind not to think about the possibilities, his eyes not to scan crowds for familiar faces, his ears for familiar voices. It never is. It never will be. Thinking too much about it distracts from the immediate need.

Which, right now, is the puzzle. Matt keeps angled away, careful even now, careful for sudden movements. The newcomer is smaller than him, but that doesn't mean anything. You don't have to be big to fight well.
]

Well, this panel needs to be depressed while that one needs to be manipulated counterclockwise thrice so that one can rise up and be put over there. At the same time. Haven't been able to do that yet, so it's anyone's guess what's next.
shiro2hero: (right ok pretend to listen and look cool)

[personal profile] shiro2hero 2017-10-18 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
[He figures this is just another alien. Or someone from another world or... something. Why would he know this stranger in a mask? He steps up closer, holding his hand up like someone would a lantern, casting the room in that fluorescent purple glow.]

Okay. I've got an extra one. Where do you need me?

[She's biting her lip now, because she just can't get over it. This guy sounds so much like her brother. Or- oh god, at least he sounds the way she remembers him. And what if that isn't accurate? What if she's started to forget what he sounds like and--

No. Focus. There's a here and now, and maybe if Pidge shows that she means no harm at all, then he'll take off that helmet and that'll end her curiosity. Focus.

Pidge moves around toward the opposite end, to the panels that the stranger can't reach from where he stands.]
Okay. You push that down, I'll turn this one, grab the one that comes up and hand it to you so you can put it in place. Sound good?
theotherholt: (what the what)

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[It's silly. Nobody knows each other, they're all here from alternate universes -- which is still the weirdest ever -- and Matt doesn't even think about it. He just nods, pointing at a part of the wall that's slightly less dusty.]

Press against that bit, I think. But watch your head, something might pop out.
theotherholt: (Default)

[personal profile] theotherholt 2017-10-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Peachy.

[Matt huffs a little, leaning a little harder against the panels so that he can reach out and grab what he's offered. His left leg is buckling a little, the old wound always choosing the worst moment to act up, to make his muscle weaker. No time to shake it out, though, otherwise he'll have to start all over.]

Okay, I'm ready.
