test drive meme 21

NOTE: The locations in this test drive are placeholders and do not fit with current game events. Due to ongoing changes as we shift to arc 3, contents of this test drive as they related to specific areas or activities are unfortunately not able to be incorporated as game canon, though if it is possible for a particular thread, you may assume conversations took place similarly in a different setting once the changeover happens ICly. Test drive threads may of course still be used for application samples!

Ingress travel can be disorienting, but there’s no need to worry! All side effects are temporary and lessen with each trip. Your body may experience several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You may have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. You notice that the area you are in is filled with a soft cerulean light and feels slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you. Regardless of your current state, however, the stress of initial Ingress travel forces your body into unconsciousness.

Waking up is another story. Or maybe it isn’t.

You find yourself in a nondescript room; sometimes with others who have found themselves in the same situation, sometimes alone. A robotic medical tech is always present to explain what’s happened in a rote fashion, though his programming does not permit him to answer specific questions. He provides some clothing, a TAB, and a guide that explains the basics of Ingress travel and why you are here. Outside the room, you'll find you're on a space station that is staffed only by other robots; the only other organics there are those who recently arrived with you, or perhaps your predecessors, who are strolling the halls in search of an observation deck or the tech they've been sent here to fix. Why not introduce yourself and say hello?

phanos

* The planet Phanos is not as it was during the last visit there. Storms of dark energy swirl across the sections of the world, though they do not yet overwhelm it. The temperature is cooler now, but sandstorms still kick up with great frequency, making cooperation an important part of survival as groups make their way across the landscape, investigating the changes. The pyramid forest remains, but the griffins who live there now venture farther down from their nests, and around a third of them have been twisted by the storms' energies into even more aggressive, monstrous versions of what they once were. Do not take one on alone, or it may be your last mistake.

* Inside one of the tallest pyramids, the lab remains intact, and rumors speak of a locked chamber in its heart that contains valuable material—but is that in the technological sense, or does it hold something monetarily precious in the right market? Maybe you don't care and you're just nosy. Either way, the vault is sealed away behind a series of complicated sliding puzzles that have just one catch—they are not possible to solve without two people operating the locking station. Are you here with a friend? If not, better hope the next guy to come along has a sharp mind for this stuff.

Weird. [But very sci-fi, which is why he might be a little more okay with this than nerds who didn't grow up watching every tv show on air. He feels kind of weird, wondering if he should somehow remember things - but he doesn't, leading to further weirdness in now knowing that other people are going to maybe remember interactions with him he was... never part of?]

I'd like to say I've grown up since that point but I don't have credible proof. Is anyone else... here? That we know. Knew. Or might soon... know?

[He cocks his head to the side.] I don't usually turn down food - and I'm not, for the record - but uh.

I don't know, I'm really feeling like more people should be wigging out the way I'm wigging out. But then again, it looks like most people have been here longer than I have... [He looks at her with a bit of a look, including her in this,] And maybe everyone's just doing what I'm doing and stamping down the confusion into my back pocket for later - so, what was that you said about ice cream?

[ He shouldn't be out here. That's a simple, given statement. The terrain leading to the pyramids is unforgiving (though thankfully not as harsh as it could have been, or what he's seen recently), but he pushes through it anyway, feeling a draw he can't quite describe in terms that would sound in any way reasoned or...well, sane.

There are snippets of voices, overheard from minds tangential and simply in given proximity, but he tunes the majority out and pushes them aside. Places like this have enough ghosts of their own, he doesn't need to add to them.

And yet, he continues to slowly follow that pull, wheelchair still lightly protesting from its earlier contact with sand, until he can hear that quiet, frustrated growl. It sparks light concern, easily too pushed aside...at least until he hears that tell-tale sound of retracting metal and his eyes go wide. He follows it around the immediate corner, and finds-- ]

Oh yeah? If it's so easy, show me how it's done, dungeon master.

[ The sarcasm is meant to bite more than it does, especially when he pairs it with such a non-threatening monicker. Of course, he isn't truly angry, it's only his pride feeling a bit bruised, and he's never really learned how to hide it. But he does mutter an aside: ]

[Months ago, she would've attacked and likely tried killing him. She's been away from Transigen long enough now that she just looks like a deer in the headlights when he responds in her native language. She doesn't get many people who understand it, much less speak it back to her. So of course she smiles, almost in a shy way. And her eyes avert away from him as she sniffs at the air and determines he isn't a threat.]

Laura.

[She doesn't bother asking his name in return. He'll either tell her or he won't.]

[Even with her being frustrated by the puzzle, she picks up on his scent. It only serves to make her more frustrated, up until his voice snaps her out of it and she realizes exactly who's there with her. Her eyes go momentarily wide, with disbelief that he's able to find her. Thankfully her feet are in motion before her mind catches up, and in a matter of seconds she's awkwardly standing at the side of his chair and gripping hold of it as tight as her little hands will allow her without crushing it.]

Charles.

[Every ounce of affection she feels for the man is poured into her tone. She wants him to know she's happy and relieved to see him, but isn't able to vocalize that properly. Her tone of voice will just have to do. She leans in close enough to sniff at him, and feels at ease when it's familiar and comforting.]

You should not be here.

[That's what comes out instead.

He isn't old and frail, but she still greatly worries about his safety. Her hand reaches out to touch at his arm. She wants to hug him but feels awkward trying without him initiating the contact.

I think we both have a habit of being where we shouldn't, hm?

[ She seems to recall...something of the months ago when she'd been here last, or at the very least she still knows him, and it's a starting point. But if she worries about his safety--apparent in how quickly she's at his side, in her tone, how suddenly attentive she is--that concern is more than returned. She's been missing for some time now (and while he isn't particularly upset that she's seemed to have missed the worst of the last couple months), and he can only wonder how that's worked out.

And only hope it's been...better. Somehow.

He places a gentle hand atop hers and nods her over to the front of the chair. The angle here at the side is awkward and not as easy to embrace from. Whether he understands her unspoken need for this, or it's his own need to prove to himself that this is real, they seem to be on the same wavelength. He's more than happy to initiate that hug when it isn't dependent upon the magic of contortion, and it comes complete with a sharp inhale, and finally having to ask: ]

Yeah, that's... [Weird, not what he remembers, it's a lot of things.]

Gone.

[Her answer is cryptic and muffled at first but when she eventually does pull back she looks him in the eyes.]

[ Gone. Well, she's not lying, at least. It explains so little, but she's here, and she's fine. (And in honesty, her presence does wonders to temper Logan's moods that he's thankful for it in a way he knows he shouldn't be for anyone here at all.)

He lets her dictate the hug itself, and lets go as she pulls away. (Smothering this one in any way would do no one any good, but it's important to lt her know, as he can, that he isn't going anywhere either.) Charles nods at the question--of course he's seen Logan--and only continues to do so. ]

I'm not sure we're going to find him back there. [ He nods to the locked door leading to, presumably, the center of the pyramid they're in. Whatever a search there may yield otherwise, he has his doubts Logan is it. ] But I am happy to help, however, you'll have me.

[The puzzle is very tempting. And Charles is here to help her. She's smart, but he's so much more intelligent than she is. He'll have to be able to figure things out. Hearing her father is around still makes her impatient to see and find him, though. She desperately wants to see him.

But Laura is good at putting her own wants and needs aside. She wasn't really allowed to have them until recently anyway. So she makes a decision to give in to the curiosity she feels, and keeps her hand resting on the arm of his wheelchair as she leads the way back toward what she had been fiddling with earlier.
]

Es un acertijo. A puzzle. It is good that you are very smart.

[Maybe her dad is waiting for her through the doors. This place is strange enough that she thinks anything can happen.]

[There's an old saying in the underground; if you wanted something protected, puzzles were as good as a lock and key. Of course, that wasn't really true. Where locks just sat there, rusting over, puzzles practically invited people to solve them. Back home they went from security measure to tradition, providing a diversion for monsters too young to remember their original purpose.

Still, if you wanted something protected...

Getting into the pyramid was easy. Once he heard the rumors, Sans couldn't resist poking around. It could've been a part of the Ingress. It could've been some fuel. It could've been a pile of rubber chickens (if he could be so lucky...). Hell, Sans would've settled for the Meaning of Friendship. He was easy to impress.]

Huh. [The first locked door was almost pretty -- round interlocking designs muddying each other in a confusing mess. Sans laid a bony palm against the widest circle, trying to move it. It didn't.] Welp.

[Another old monster saying: When the universe blocks off a puzzle, it opens a small business.

... Okay, that one was less a monster saying and more a Sans original. Either way, whoever comes through next will see a skeleton sitting by the base of the puzzle door, looking lifeless save for a few scattered snores. A cardboard sign is balanced in his lap, advertising his services in crude script:]

[It's a skeleton.

A skeleton with a sign. Laura stops walking and looks utterly perplexed by this. His sign doesn't make much of any sense to her but she still reads it anyway. Her reading skills are slow thanks to being locked away her entire life but she eventually manages. And what she reads makes her snort.
]

You think people will pay for lies?

[She's half not expecting the skeleton to answer.]

People do that all the time, kiddo.

[Sans rolls his shoulders, bones cracking as he works out the stiffness from his nap. So much for no response.]

At least I'm honest about it.

[Wink.]
