( Charles can still feel the phantom pain that had emanated from Shaw's mind as he died, his veins still fizzing with the very same impotent fury, heart hurting with every beat. It seems silly now, to have wished for a different outcome. He'd always known, of course, that Erik had a plan, that he wouldn't be satisfied until he enacted his revenge.

But he'd hoped - foolishly - that he'd find some way to change his mind.

That anger leaves him in an abrupt rage when Charles feels his companion at the edges of his mind. Instead of balling his fists, he lets out a ragged breath, scanning the horizon to find where the other man is coming from. His own smile is soft, eyes bright even in the dirt around them.

Erik.

( He moves to approach him, reach out, but there's something puzzled in the furrow between his brows. His gaze sweeps earnestly over the other man's face, the wrinkles that hadn't been there the days before, the heaviness that sits on him like a shroud. )

What --?

( He looks older. ) Something's happened.
