[It all made sense now. She hadn't been mistaken - there really had been other agents of Cipher inside MSF. It was how they had known that her modifications to ZEKE had been completed, how she'd been forced into action. Of course, Chico finding her had only accelerated the events, but even so, Cipher had known. Had been told.

There was no way she could have been safe at any point in her mission. She had known less than anyone - except Big Boss himself, it seems. No scenario existed in which she would have been able to stay a part of MSF. It had only ever been a silly little girl's fantasy, a dream now crushed to pieces.

Cipher sees all, even your dreams.

It wasn't just petty anger at Big Boss refusing the call of Cipher that incited the destruction of Mother Base, then. It was revenge at being used, at being mocked openly by the clever Kazuhira Miller.

If only she'd known. She could have told him of the fate of any poor, misguided fool that dared to try and deceive Cipher. But then that was Cipher's strength - information, communication, a network of eyes and ears across the world. Failure to communicate is failure itself.

Walking side by side with him, Paz looks up at Miller with doleful eyes, sick with the knowledge that so much could have been prevented if only they'd talked. Realizes, then, that he is still talking.]

Ah, I'm fine. I must have blacked out when I hit the water, because the next thing I remember is arriving here. Well, the Moira. But the Medical unit said that I was fit as a fiddle.

[When did it become so hard to resist the urge to slap on a plastic smile, to giggle? When did "Paz"'s easy, childish nature become instinct, drowning out the real Pacifica Ocean? She feels sick to her stomach.]
