test drive meme

Ingress travel can be disorienting, but there’s no need to worry! All side effects are temporary and lessen with each trip. Your body may experience several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You may have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. You notice that the area you are in is filled with a soft cerulean light and feels slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you. Regardless of your current state, however, the stress of initial Ingress travel forces your body into unconsciousness.

Waking up is another story. Or maybe it isn’t.

You find yourself in a nondescript room; sometimes with others who have found themselves in the same situation, sometimes alone. A medical tech is always present to explain what’s happened before giving you some clothes, a TAB, and a guide that discusses things in further detail. This entire process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health in order to obtain your signature—a specific frequency that will allow them to hone in on exactly where it is you’re from in order to get you back there. You spend your first week on the Ingress Complex while other accommodations and arrangements are made for you.

phanos

⋆ Phanos is classified as Exploration Class (EC) and is open to all travelers. The dry heat on the planet is overwhelming, but it's important that as many people as possible visit so that scientists can track down the origin of a strong signal pulsing somewhere on the planet. Its frequency indicates that if it is found, Ingress engineers may be able to hone in on people's signatures to send them home. However, frequent dust storms on the planet's surface are causing interference. It is strongly advised that investigators visit in groups—and keep their mouths closed!

⋆ Between dust storms, at the ege of the sandy plains, travelers will notice a series of pyramid-like structures. The smallest ones are just a few feet high, and the largest reach as high as ten-story buildings. Those who press on will find the terrain more difficult, as they must trek through increasingly dense clusters of pyramids of all sizes. Eventually, the pyramid 'forest' clears to reveal the largest pyramid of all, the size of a small mountain. Its peak is guarded by nests of griffin-like creatures which are no larger than a medium-sized dog. Those with combat skills should be in no danger, unless a whole nest attacks at once!

⋆ Multiple stone doors built into the top of the pyramid lead into a surprising space: a sleek lab, filled with incredibly advanced technology. Scientists, engineers and techies could happily spend years studying the equipment and deciphering the data it contains. But in the darkest corners, there's a quiet chittering...are the travelers really alone?

they'd make such good partners

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-19 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[The person that appears around the corner of the strange lab is not, strictly speaking, a person, as his dual robotic and canine natures disqualify him from that category. There's a robotic "WOOF" as an artificial German shepard gallumphs over to Q and immediately begins sniffing at his robot butt.

A moment later, he's followed by his master.]

Barkley! Get back—oh, hey. [He blinks.] You're back? You're back.
diamondhack: (shiny things)

the lab is on fire 80% of the time

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
[The voice is familiar, the name 'Barkley' is certainly not.

She turns on her heel, hair seemingly longer than before, so much so that she's redone it to a style that's more manageable than just her usual fishtail braid.]

Nate?

[It takes a full second to register it's Nate, and Barkley the dog she'd built him, and it's Nate.

Physical touch is seldom offered from Isha. It's reserved for a special sort of person, a fellow jackass sometimes.

She's throwing her arms around him in a tight hug as soon as she's within his space.]

Bloody hell, you're still here.
sketchycharacter: (pic#10162742)

seems low

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, of course I am—holy shit!

[He's surprised by the hug, because even Isha Devan's secretly warm and mooshy center still has crispy bits in it, but he laughs delightedly and hugs her right back, because his has none. He's grinning broadly when they let go.]

I should have known you'd be sneaking around where you shouldn't be if I ever saw you again. [He means that in a good way.] How the hell have you been?
diamondhack: (trying to trick me?)

120%?

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
[The hug is enough sentimentality for one day, because saying that she kind of missed him would be Too Much.]

New day, new hairstyle. Learning I can't actually outdrink men five times my size.

[Boy she's had to lose to those a few times and it was only mildly humiliating. At the end of the day, she was the one who could still walk in heels.]

That was the worst of it. [No it wasn't.] What about you, what's happened? Not much different it seems from the usual suspicious fare.
sketchycharacter: (strong jaw)

that's more like it

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Body mass does beat out willpower eventually.

[He snorts. Casual derision as a basic foundation of their friendship—he missed it more than he knew.]

Me? Oh, nothing. It's really domestic and normal now that we're not on the move. Quiet evenings at home, day trips to alien techno-pyramids, taking my robodog out for walkies. Boring, really.
diamondhack: most definitely (obviously)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-23 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, right. Of course. The ubiquitous Barkley.

[The same Barkley that Q has been swatting at playfully for the past few minutes. He'd never met a friend like Barkley around these parts, how exciting!]

You know I named it ND for a reason, right?
sketchycharacter: (heyyyyyy)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-23 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you?

[Nate gives her a blank look. He hadn't given it that much thought.]

I figured that was some kind of robot designation thing. Like part of a serial number.

[Meanwhile, Barkley nee ND is just as excited to have a new friend and scampers around Q happily.]
diamondhack: (oh damn)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-23 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would I give a dog a serial number? You of all people should've figured it out. [She's so disappointed right now, but she's going to spell it out for him.] I can't believe you didn't get Indiana Jones. This whole time I had such high hopes.
sketchycharacter: (:D)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-25 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Me of all—

[Oh. Oh. Nate stares at her for a long moment, then cracks up.]

Oh, my god. That's great. That's perfect. Isha, you are such a nerd.
diamondhack: (tough luck)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the whole hacker-thief-engineer bit didn't give it away?

[And he'll never know Q was named after an ancient radio show.]

I wear all of these fashionable things to distract how big of a nerd I am.

[The grin implies that's not the case but why not make some fun out if it.]
sketchycharacter: (pic#10162787)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-26 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Please, don't give me that look. You'd be mortified if everyone knew about it. I'm just one of the special ones.

[He clearly is, given the gift of Barkley. Nate's grin shifts into a fond smile.]

It's been too long, you know that? I haven't had anyone else to gossip with.
diamondhack: (the wolf)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-06-26 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
How is that possible? No one else on this bloody... whatever it is now loves to gossip?

[Something is very wrong and she doesn't believe this is possible.

Q now finally takes notice of Nate, and he starts bounding up to him, barking happily.]

There's a lot to tell you, honestly. It's not the same out there without a partner in crime.
sketchycharacter: (pic#10162812)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-06-27 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. [He makes a dismissive motion with his hand.] But it's not the same.

[There's gossipy shits in any world, any galaxy, as far as he can tell. But it's not as fun when it's not someone who doesn't get his way of seeing things.

Q is still an angel and cool as hell, so he immediately gets patting, even though it makes Barkley whine.]

Don't tell me everyone's too intimidated to stop up to the plate.
diamondhack: (oh damn)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-07-03 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[She squats now, beckoning Barkley. She never got to really see him in action herself, outside of the motion tests and programming tests. It's not the same seeing something you built outside of the testing phase.]

It's unfortunate how many weren't so keen on letting someone smarter than them be a part of their conversation.
sketchycharacter: (side-eye)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-07-04 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Barkley might be slightly goofier than Isha originally designed him to be. Ever heard of the bit where pets start to resemble their owners?

He likes having his belly rubbed. There must be a lot of sensors there.]

That just makes them extra dumb. I never had a job go sideways because I was working with someone too smart.

[But he's usually the smart one, so.]
diamondhack: (so done)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-07-09 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
[She will gladly oblige and rub Barkley's belly. What a good dog.]

No, not working. Talking. Bloody complexes, the lot of them. Though I suppose I could've talked less...
sketchycharacter: (:[)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-07-10 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Such a Good Boy.]

Nah. If you talked less, they might have gotten the impression that you're some quiet and demure type.
diamondhack: (excuse me?)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-07-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well sometimes quiet and demure is a good way to throw someone off. Unfortunately it doesn't apply to non-humans half so well.
sketchycharacter: (pic#10737512)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-07-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a real story there.
diamondhack: (please don't)

[personal profile] diamondhack 2017-07-15 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
What is there to say? Big hulking aliens don't register human emotions and nuances. I can't exactly read a face I've never seen in my life when it doesn't work like a person.
sketchycharacter: (pic#10737694)

[personal profile] sketchycharacter 2017-07-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
See, there you go. Big hulking aliens. We might have those here, too, but they're different big hulking aliens.
