test drive meme 21

NOTE: The locations in this test drive are placeholders and do not fit with current game events. Due to ongoing changes as we shift to arc 3, contents of this test drive as they related to specific areas or activities are unfortunately not able to be incorporated as game canon, though if it is possible for a particular thread, you may assume conversations took place similarly in a different setting once the changeover happens ICly. Test drive threads may of course still be used for application samples!

Ingress travel can be disorienting, but there’s no need to worry! All side effects are temporary and lessen with each trip. Your body may experience several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You may have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. You notice that the area you are in is filled with a soft cerulean light and feels slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you. Regardless of your current state, however, the stress of initial Ingress travel forces your body into unconsciousness.

Waking up is another story. Or maybe it isn’t.

You find yourself in a nondescript room; sometimes with others who have found themselves in the same situation, sometimes alone. A robotic medical tech is always present to explain what’s happened in a rote fashion, though his programming does not permit him to answer specific questions. He provides some clothing, a TAB, and a guide that explains the basics of Ingress travel and why you are here. Outside the room, you'll find you're on a space station that is staffed only by other robots; the only other organics there are those who recently arrived with you, or perhaps your predecessors, who are strolling the halls in search of an observation deck or the tech they've been sent here to fix. Why not introduce yourself and say hello?

phanos

* The planet Phanos is not as it was during the last visit there. Storms of dark energy swirl across the sections of the world, though they do not yet overwhelm it. The temperature is cooler now, but sandstorms still kick up with great frequency, making cooperation an important part of survival as groups make their way across the landscape, investigating the changes. The pyramid forest remains, but the griffins who live there now venture farther down from their nests, and around a third of them have been twisted by the storms' energies into even more aggressive, monstrous versions of what they once were. Do not take one on alone, or it may be your last mistake.

* Inside one of the tallest pyramids, the lab remains intact, and rumors speak of a locked chamber in its heart that contains valuable material—but is that in the technological sense, or does it hold something monetarily precious in the right market? Maybe you don't care and you're just nosy. Either way, the vault is sealed away behind a series of complicated sliding puzzles that have just one catch—they are not possible to solve without two people operating the locking station. Are you here with a friend? If not, better hope the next guy to come along has a sharp mind for this stuff.

[Hah.

So what do you say to this? What should you ever say when faced with someone gone long enough that you could actually miss them...and for whom you've lost the memories of their actual departure?

There's not much to say other than for Mettaton to walk up, swathed in the tattered scarf he had become ever so attached to and lean in and peruse the prices offered on the sign. Cute. Real cute, Sans.]

Well, well, well. Can't come back without trying to start a business, can you?

[He says it loud enough, perhaps, to rouse the dozing skeleton.]

Your entrepreneurial skills are simply unmatched, darling. But aren't you technically still under my employ?

[Maybe that's just his way of saying 'welcome back to space hell.' And hey, the robot's entirely pleased to have been given a positive experience for the trouble he went through to convince himself that he should explore a pyramid.]

[Cracking an eye socket, Sans peers up at his former-perhaps-current boss and grins. Though in defense against cheekiness, it's kinda all he ever does.

The scarf cuts a clean line across his ribs, but that was nothing new. Sans ignores it, he's good at that.]

I didn't realize there was a non-compete clause in our contract, boss. Here to buy a hint?

[Mettaton should have hidden it away perhaps, but nowadays the safest place to keep a memento is close to you. Not in your house. Not in your PacDisc. On your person, and making sure that no one can steal or hurt it.

Lord help them should anyone try.

But that isn't the topic of thought right now. What's important is that this conversation go well. Of all the ones that he's had lately, this one really can't go so poorly as usual given who he is speaking to. Though there's very little humor or gaudy lilt in his tone, he does put on a very light act that nothing's changed.]

Well we never really drafted up a traditional contract, did we? I just decided that you would hold up to your word and stay around long enough to market for me!

[Haha. Ha...]

I daresay we've missed Leg Con by a fair degree, haven't we? A shame, that. But late is far better than never, darling.

[He won't say he's happy to see Sans again. He won't mention how nice it is to see another monster, someone he did actually (really?) miss.

But Sans probably gets the idea; he knows Mettaton's an eccentric guy.]

Sounds like you made a bad bet, pal. [He shrugs. Depending on him is for chumps.] If it helps, it wasn't personal.

'Sides, I didn't get very far.

Betting on a lazy comedian is always a poor wager to take...but betting while in a situation as...precarious as the one we are all in? That was much more foolish. Suffice it to say, I don't blame you darling.

[He hasn't the memory to know why he might blame Sans. It's...for the better.]

Is it selfish, I wonder, to be glad there's another monster here? Well, that's not new for me!! So selfish it shall be!!

[How shallow of him, to reveal his hand. If memory served, he'd made Sans uncomfortable the last time he'd placed any importance on the small skeleton. But maybe if Sans looked hard enough, he might notice why.

Or maybe not that hard at all. The scuffs and dents marring Mettaton's chassis went ignored by the robot himself, including the chipped corner of his shoulder, the cracks over his speaker, and most especially, the gash across his neck segments very well-hidden by the scarf he wore. Vanity didn't seem to be a part of his personality anymore...]

[As far as he's concerned, his reasons aren't all that interesting. Besides that, he'd failed completely -- not exactly something he desired forgiveness for, or even to put a microscope on.

The subject change is decent. A little interrelated for him, but he wouldn't throw the life preserver back in the guy's face. Especially not one as confusing as that.]

Well, you've still got Asriel and Toriel, right? [He thinks? He hopes? He's not sure.] But I'm glad to see you too, big guy.

[He doesn't comment directly on the cracks. It's not his way. But he makes note, filing it away for the opportune moment.]

Where are they, anyway? Y'know... everybody.

[What a question. For his part, Mettaton chooses to circumvent it a little at first. Just casually sidestepping it with his own comments and questions.]

How kind of you to say that, I'm utterly flattered at the praise!

[Could he sound any faker? Jeez.]

Who have you seen so far, darling?

Plenty of people, actually. [Weirdly, considering it was an abandoned pyramid.] Some kid I don't know, the kid, the other kid, the prince kid, some strangers, and nowwww...

[He loops his hand with a flourish before it lands in Mettaton's general direction.]

Just you, bucko.
