ABOARD THE MOIRA
Whether adjusting to space travel has been difficult or not, there is always something to be done. From working to leisure, the Moira offers a multitude of opportunities to get to know your crewmates a bit better. Exploration of the ship is highly encouraged, but as another planet grows closer to being docked, things start to get a little hectic. You'll notice a slight change in the artificial gravity as the Moira is pulled into a gravitational field; however, more noticeable changes can be found in the overall morale as you prepare to descend.

☄ on your own
There are plenty of other communal areas on the ship to explore! Pick a place, and see where it takes you. ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

☄ round 'em up
The day begins normally. You check out the mess hall and report to your assigned job, and so far, nothing seems incredibly out of place. However, as the hours pass, you begin to notice something strange scurrying along wall edges and into open vents. For the most part, these rodents are harmless—in this stage. While they may get into the food supply in the Cargo Bay or terrorize those in the kitchen, they are not violent and appear to be skittish. However, once they've "matured" - the color of their tail will have changed from a light gray to a very dark purple, prompting them to enter a temporary stasis inside a cocoon - they aren't so cute anymore. These paklers are vicious, will bite if they're caught, and defend themselves with claws as well as the protrusions on their bodies. There is nothing to be done about them except capture them and eject them into space as they are considered a pest and very harmful to the crew and the ship. Once they run out of food, they will turn on each other as well as anything resembling a living creature. The captains provide the proper equipment, electric nets as well as tranquilizers, to assist with the capture of the paklers and their immediate removal from the Moira.

☄ what's yours is mine
Something seems a bit off about the laundry delivery service these days, doesn't it? Has the Moira always had one of those? Whether you realize it immediately or not, something is very wrong about the clothes that have suddenly appeared in your wardrobe. They are either much too big or far too small, and as far as you can tell, there seems to be no happy medium in all of this. Will you Dress To Impress in your new uniforms? Will you swap with someone who might be a similar size regardless of the fact their uniform colors are not the same as your own? Or will you simply walk naked through the halls of the ship, carefree and bare to the rest of your crewmates?

☄ n'sync
While exploring the ship, first down one hall and then another, you come across a strange door you've never seen before. When you pull it open, you'll find someone, a crew member, standing on the other side, hand outstretched as if they've just opened that door from the opposite side. Every move you make, they mirror, and if they shift to the left or right, you also shift left or right. Absolutely everything the both of you do is the same except for the words that come out of your mouth; somehow, you still manage to maintain the ability to talk without mimicking your partner. You're unable to completely control your movements again until someone says "in sync". Good luck figuring out the magic words, and if you decide to question the captains (or anyone else) about it, they won't have any idea what it is you're talking about.

[ The woman almost startles him and he's grateful for the gentle way she gets his attention. He immediately takes a step back out of her way and uses his hand to hold his place in his book as he closes it.

Right, librarians. It'd stand to reason a collection of this size would have at least one. If anyone knows this collection, it'd be one of them. Hopefully she falls into that category and isn't a volunteer. ]

Excuse me, miss. Do you work here?

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yes-- [She slides the book into place and turns back around, still all pleasant smiles. It's always nice to have a new patron in the library.] I'm the head librarian, Elizabeth DeWitt. Can I help you with something?

[He seemed as though he had been actually reading, not flipping through looking for something, but perhaps he actually was looking for something specific. And of anyone who worked there, Elizabeth would know where to find it if they did indeed have it.]
komarran: (insert something dry and sarcastic)

[personal profile] komarran 2016-03-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've been recently recruited [ There's a small twinge of a humorless smile at that word given how little choice he had in the matter. ] and am getting my bearings.

Is there anything in your collection regarding the history of this galaxy, Ms. DeWitt?

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-08 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. [There's a little sympathetic wince-- Elizabeth is perfectly aware that she's in the minority of people who actually don't mind being on the Moira, but that doesn't mean she can't understand how some people wouldn't appreciate being uprooted like this.]

Yes, actually! Follow me. [She nods towards the end of the stack and walks towards the shelf that houses the history books.] It's a little spotty, every planet apparently has its own history and they appear not to interact with each other very much, but from the pieces comes the image on the puzzle, right? Did you need information on space travel as well?
komarran: (why is this my life)

[personal profile] komarran 2016-03-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ Planets and there are history books on them. Even if it's only general history, it's a place to start. He smiles lightly at her description as he follows. ]

Yes, actually. I'd be curious to compare it to space travel where I'm from. [ A beat, then: ] Is there no cross-planetary communication or trade here then?

[ That's... strange. Clearly they have ships capable of it here or the Moira wouldn't be housing books on any of them. ]

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-08 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
If there is, I haven't heard of it. [She says with a shrug.] It does seem odd, I wouldn't say any of the planets we've visited as long as I've been here have been technologically incapable of communication. Most of them have had Ingresses, even. Perhaps there is communication, however given most of our stays don't amount to more than a month and a half, it goes unnoticed by us.

[...of course if there was communication, at least from Caducus Primary, Elizabeth would be surprised if anybody let them on their planet.]

[She stops in front of the shelf, towards the front of the library. The shelves are healthy, yes, but there's clearly room for the collection to grow.]
Here we are. So, several of these are from Captain Thán's collection, things he collected before I arrived. But the first planet I saw--

[She pulls a book off the shelf carefully, and no doubt Duv can see why immediately. The cover is made of glass.]

Caducus Primary. Almost all of their infrastructure was made of glass.

I'll have to investigate myself next time we dock.

[ Surely a month and a half would be enough to investigate if he set himself to it. His mind is already in motion, making a priority list of what to look for on any civilized planet they docked on when she sees the book she pulls out.

And stares. ]

Even their books? [ That would be a nightmare to try to conserve. Even keeping up with it could be a disaster, one fumble by a less-than-careful patron and... ]

Why is it out in the main collection?

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you do find out something, I'd be curious to know. It does seem odd that we wouldn't have any kind of communication with other planets, but I've had to learn all of this technology mostly from the ground up. [She says with a wincing smile. It's still a little embarrassing to feel like she doesn't know everything about the ship six months in, but she's making an effort!]

[She grins at his reaction to the book, clearly excited to share this with someone who cares.]
Just this one. The rest were the usual thing, but this was so beautiful, I traded almost everything I had for it.

[Elizabeth blinks up at him, tilting her head slightly in confusion.] Because it's not my personal collection-- it's for the crew.

SORRY THIS IS LATE life be crazy right now

[personal profile] komarran 2016-03-17 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's studied Barrayarans trying to figure out galactic technology, he understands these things take longer than six months to understand. Though he doesn't know this young woman's circumstances.

But the technology is something he'll come back to. Later. His eyes are fixed on the book as he says absently, ]
Libraries do have rare collections.

[ Ones every day patrons aren't allowed to touch. He glances back at Liz and makes a motion towards the book. ] May I?

IS COOL 83b

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! [Elizabeth smiles and extends the book gently to him with both hands.]

I suppose we could have a rare collection, and a book from Caducus Primary certainly would fit the bill, given the planet isn't there anymore... Perhaps that's why I haven't hidden it, though. Their history was cut short by actions this crew took.
komarran: (ah look there's my career going bye-bye)

[personal profile] komarran 2016-03-19 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. [ He accepts the book with great care. There's no way he's going to be the one to drop it and he moves to a nearby table to give him a stable surface to place it while he looks through the pages.

At her next words, his brow furrows and he looks from the book back to Elizabeth. ]
The planet is gone?
tearmeanewone: (081)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-03-21 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[She follows him over to the table, her hands clasped behind her back. Her overall demeanor is far more somber now, and she nods.]

Yes. The Ingress on their planet was damaged as they attempted to force us back to the ship, and the resulting release of energy split the planet in half. I don't know if any other books survived.
komarran: (why is this my life)

[personal profile] komarran 2016-03-23 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I see. [ He frowns and regards the book in front of him with even more care. He's studied his far share of tragedies, but the entire death of a planet... ]

Is that common here?
