I like surprises.

[That's a half-truth. He likes some surprises. The kind that work in his favor. But there is something in the way Miles says that which gets Tony's attention. He's got a casual calm to him that doesn't quite match what Tony knows of mercenaries. A smooth sort of confidence that isn't sitting on the edge of a knife. It's more methodical, in the language he speaks himself.

He wants to know what kind of things Miles has done.]

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. And your mother.

[He's genuinely sympathetic about that. He might put on a lot of fronts for the public, but Tony was never the type to wish anyone harm. This sort of thing is what he works to prevent and fix. All of those experiments with advanced technology are for improving daily life for everyone. He's already surprised by how calm Miles is when he relates his story, though.]

But those treatments must have been costly. Is that why...?

[Is it rude to ask a man why he joined a mercenary ship? Oops.]
