ABOARD THE MOIRA
Whether adjusting to space travel has been difficult or not, there is always something to be done. From working to leisure, the Moira offers a multitude of opportunities to get to know your crewmates a bit better. Exploration of the ship is highly encouraged, but as another planet grows closer to being docked, things start to get a little hectic. You'll notice a slight change in the artificial gravity as the Moira is pulled into a gravitational field; however, more noticeable changes can be found in the overall morale as you prepare to descend.

☄ on your own

There are plenty of other communal areas on the ship to explore! Pick a place, and see where it takes you. ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

H A I S T O S

Unlike previously visited locations, the sweltering heat of this planet can be felt long before arrival. The surface of Haistos is not a place for those with a weak constitution. It’s in a constant state of low-level volcanic activity as its land masses are dotted with many volcanoes—all of them spewing black ash into the air. Breathing is difficult without the aid of a respirator due to the potential of breathing in ash, and the plant life is stunted, adapted to living in an environment with little sunlight. The weather is unpredictable, and ash-storms will often blow in fiercely, leaving people trapped for a hours at a time before they blow themselves out. But that same ash which chokes everything on this planet is what also provides its livelihood. Haistos’ volcanic resources are a highly sought-after commodity elsewhere in the universe, and as long as gathering the ash is profitable, people will continue to return.

Looking closely, etched into the curling paths of ignimbrite deposits that swirl along the base of the volcanoes is a language that is easily translated by the MID, often resembling Latin. Carved over time by visitors and travelers, it tells a tale of fire and stone and power. Some might even say there are mystic abilities associated with these volcanoes, though the rumors and myths behind it seem to be nothing but a warning to those who think to go looking for it. It’s also hard to tell if the words carry any true meaning since there are no natives to question, and all those who harvest the ash can only tell stories. Still, it’s apparent that people from many different times have all added to the scrolling messages.

A word of caution: you cannot build here. Stone, metal, and wood all burn, all crumble. Only what is true can survive, and fire will show its true quality.

☄ breathing sparks
Despite the haphazard lay of the land, there are things to do. Or, at least, things to see. The rocky terrain often leads to some inactive volcanoes that are perfect for exploring and harvesting the ash that continues to rain down across Haistos. There are step-like structures built into the sides of the volcanic craters, narrow but sturdy. With each move down, the air gets even thicker, and your respirator takes longer and longer to filter the unbreathable atmosphere the deeper into the planet you travel. Yet, the risk of asphyxiation is worth what awaits at the bottom of the staircase. Still warm, the volcanic rocks that are sunk into the deposits are both smooth and clear as crystal. Most of these gems retain heat permanently and can be used to warm small spaces. Gathering too many together in a single place, however, creates a reaction with the limited air supply and can spark a faux volcanic eruption—yes, these rocks are capable of producing lava at an impossibly quick rate.

Is it possible to outrun the flow and reach the steps before it begins filling the bottom of the crater? The only thing worse than a sudden swimming pool of lava would be the respirator finally breaking because of the abrupt, extreme heat, wouldn’t it?

☄ under pressure
Despite being unable to actually build any structures of substance on Haistos, walking around the planet itself is surprisingly easy. Due to its unusual composition, the ground itself is a noticeable mixture of dark rock and shining surfaces. More than that, each step around the bases of the volcanoes reveals something both amazing and rather fascinating: the ability to create diamonds without much pressure at all. It only takes a single step or even a hand print. Take a break and sit to rest? Diamonds. Wrestling over what pile of ash is yours to claim? Diamonds. Tripping and falling and refusing to get up so that no one sees your embarrassment? Diamonds. Suddenly, moving around on Haistos has taken a whole new turn. Especially when it’s completely possible to keep what you make with your very own body weight.

☄ if you break it, you buy it
Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet.

At the base of one of the smaller volcanoes, this message is carved into the rock in large, curling script. The volcano is currently inactive and is dotted with openings large enough for visitors to enter through. Stranger than the message is the faint tinkling sound - almost like glass clinking against glass - that grows louder the deeper into the volcano you go. The intricate honeycomb of paths all lead in the same direction—towards the sound and a mellow blue glow.

At the center, the sound is loud and the light illuminates a large space. Thousands of crystalline creatures swirl and bump against one another, the source of both the sound and light. They appear to be a cross between a lightning bug and bee, glowing and noisy and harmless. The beautiful sight may, or may not, be dampened by the fact that the cavern is littered with glass honeycombs that have been built up within the bodies of fallen travelers. It’s clear that the organisms didn’t harm them, perhaps the result of too much ash or broken respirators, and the honey they’ve produced is light blue and clear. It’s sweet if eaten, bright and citrus-y, and carries an earthy undertone, making the skin glow temporarily after ingesting.

If careful, visitors may harvest the honey, but do not disturb the creatures. Their wings are sharp, and when agitated, they swarm out of fear.

[ from the blank sort of morose expression, the cat's antics have Andyr's lips curling upwards in one corner, until a slight, barely there laugh leaves him, fingers tapping around like a little spider for Courser to chase.

he doesn't want to be agreeing to this. he wants to say fuck you and fuck this place and fuck everyone else here and just run until he finds somewhere quiet to curl in for the next few hours. until he can get his head on right. until his mind and his body can just be his. it's the singular, constantly pulsing urge he's had for the last six years, that had him carving his way through Hapsburg guards and leaving bloodied hallways as he broke free. but they'd always found him, in the end. hopeless, maybe, but he'd rather be throwing himself against a wall that just sit and accept his lot. surrender.

there's still information needed, Mikal and Alva are still out there somewhere, if he was stolen somewhere else, he has to find a way back to get them. he'd sworn he wouldn't leave without Alva and Posie in tow. to get to that information, he has to submit to this physical, and while the part of him that has survived and kept some part of his dignity by refusing to accept any compromises is disgusted with it, he's telling himself it's for Posie, and for Alva. ]

If you take my blood, I want to see what you do with it, I don't want anything outside of blood type and 'he's not carrying a pathogen' recorded. And I want to see it destroyed.

[ Not be told it was, he wants to see it contaminated and made useless. He wants to watch the testing, he wants to be certain nothing about his genetics or DNA is kept on record, anywhere, for any reason.

As for the bit about equipment - ]

That's fine. [ Andyr shifts, moving to stand, giving the cat a little boop on the nose as he pushes himself up, and spares a last glance down at the planet, then out at the stares. His dad really would have loved to see this. Would've been happy he got to, at least. ] Let's get it over with.

[ Adrien didn't push for an answer, giving Andyr time to consider his compromise and prepared to fall back to plan F if necessary. It was a relief, though Adrien's expression never shifted, when the man agreed.

He noted that Andyr was insisting on terms that Adrien had already offered but he suspected it was the younger rman's way of establishing control back over the conversation. From Andyr's attitude, appearance and what he'd shared of his background, Adrien could understand the desire and so he didn't make a remark.

Instead, he nodded in agreement. ]

Of course.

[ As Andyr moved to stand, Adrien gave ground, stepping back to ensure the man had plenty of room. Well, so long as Courser didn't count. Deprived of his finger spider to chase, the young tracker scooted around Andyr's legs and Adrien's, his colorful tail lightly brushing at pant legs as he careened between them both. ]

Come on. We can get this done and you can get to stretching your legs and possibly find some more answers to your questions.

Though I do strongly advise that you consider changing into the thermals they provide. Space is, quite cold even in the face of the strongest life support systems.

[ it is partly that. andyr hasn't been granted control of his life in six years, so know that there's some flicker of it, he has a sort of strangle hold on it. that, and, he wants to be absolutely clear - he has to see it, nothing is put in record. it sounds a bit like someone agreeing to something desperate, wanting to make certain of the reassurances.

there's an absent nod about the thermals - he is pretty cold as it is, and the clothes he wore in Hapsburg were hospital gown kinds of thin. all that's keeping him insulated now is the bloody guard's jacket. a change would be good.

he's on his way, at Adrien's side, tension and nerves mounting again the closer they get to the room, when every molecule in him is wanting to run. Instead, he's trying to focus on something else - the cat. ]

Don't remember them usually following people like that. [ of course, it's been six years since he's seen a cat, but he's pretty sure he got the feel for them.

then again, this really isn't a normal cat, is it? ]

[ Walking back through the hallways Adrien adopted the same purposeful stride he'd taken in leading Andyr towards the observation area. It was, perhaps, a little less aggressive but paired with his scowl it did the job of keeping people out of their way.

This time, rather than sticking close to the doctor's left side, Courser continued to romp in between the two men. Occasionally he scooted forward as a scent caught his attention and he seemed to be able to unerringly make turns before Adrien motioned for a change of direction. ]

His name is Courser and he's trained. [ He remarked, paused and then amended. ] There is always work to be done, but he's well trained in basic obedience and shipboard life.

[ Adrien briefly considered opening up the topic of why and how Courser had come to be trained as thoroughly as he had but he quickly dismissed it. ]

He's called a bahari, subspecies tracker. He's still just a juvenile and no, he doesn't come from my world. I received him from my previous employer.

[ There was a brief pause and then one more, small amendment. ]

If you ever find yourself missing a singular sock, let me know.

[ Keeping his attention on the cat seems to work well enough in at least distracting, if not slightly calming, his nerves, the closer they get to the lab. At least no one bothered them, and Andyr wasn't having to meet the eyes of people staring at his broken cuffs and his bloodstained clothes and his lack of shoes. ]

Hey Courser. I'm Andyr. [ yes, he's definitely just introduced himself to the pet cat before he has to the man who owns him. whatever, he likes animals more than people, and he's been right on them being kinder more often than not. or at least more pleasant to associate with. ]

Check it out. [ He's saying to the cat, as he holds out one of his wrists, the split chain that once connected it to the matching binding on the other arm now dangling, and he starts to wiggle it above the cat like a toy, while Adrien explains where Courser came from, and all that.

Not that he isn't paying attention. He notes the bit about 'bahari' and 'tracker' and 'previous employer'. So space isn't new to this man. Good to know. ]

So you're the laundry gremlin. I always thought it was just my sister.

[ The last sentence is trailed off, because they're at the lab before he realizes, and Andyr's suddenly wishing he made "doing it outside of the actual room" part of the causes. But he doubts the equipment can be easily moved, so it's just as well. He does, however, unconsciously come to a screeching halt, with a sharp inhale. The scent of antiseptic and latex is already assaulting his senses, giving that same knee-jerk nausea that it has since he'd first been processed at Hapsburg. Just get it over with, he's telling himself, and stomping through the door, with jaw set, like a man on a mission.

Back to one of the empty sections, with the hospital bed and the beeping machines and the IV stands, and he crosses his arms over his chest, looking back to Adrien like he's already wanting to bolt. ]

Okay. So what now?

[ As is so often and painfully the case, Courser has better manners than his companion. Adrien doesn't even pick up on the subtle cue that no might be a good time to offer his own name, even as makes a mental note of Andyr. He really is just that bad at these things.

He's also a little distracted by watching Courser out of the corner of his eye. The young bahari is immediately caught up by the game of dangling chain. For him, the implication of the chain means nothing, it's merely a toy and he jumps and twists and bats at it. At one point Andyr might witness teeth, that suggest the young cat isn't entirely to be trifled with, attach to chain and try to yank it down.

Adrien clears his throat at about the same moment Courser recognizes his play is getting too rough and he quickly lets go and goes back to darting in and around their legs.

Before the doctor can make a comment about the word 'sister' (and his ears did perk up a bit there) they are at the Medbay and Andyr is moving through the doors like a man possessed. He even leaves Courser in his wake and the bahari shares a quick glance with his companion, before Adrien nods and motions towards the young man. Unless Andyr pushes him away, he's going to find Courser jumping up on the bed with him, head tilting at him curiously.

Adrien's movements are more reserved and concise. He shares a glance with the medbay tech who had given him shit earlier and reaches his hand out to take the chart that is passed to him. It was the intake datapad they had opened on Andyr. Walking over towards the bed, he grabbed a cart that carried all the necessary evils for drawing blood and also taking vitals, though the doctor reached into the pocket of his lab coat and withdrew a stethoscope that did not appear to be standard issue.

He spun datapad about and held it out towards Andyr so the man could take it and read what was reported. ]

The vitals and data we take today will be used to set the baseline parameters that feed into your MID. This information is used to maintain a status check on your condition. If you are injured or your vitals drop to near death levels, it alerts medical to your need for aid.

[ Well aware of how it sounded, he gave Andyr a knowing look. ]

Before you say it. At this time there is no way to remove the MID. You want to find a way around it, I'm sure you're not the only one on the crew, you can go find friends later. For now, this is what it does and part of the file the data we're drawing now.

[ Would it be easier on him to lie? Yep. But Adrien chose his time and his place when he needed to lie and this was neither.

About this time, Andyr might also note that a paw was bumping his forearm. Excuse but ... ear rubs??

Pushy alien cat like creature was pushy. ]

[ Instinctively, Andyr's eyes follow the doctor wherever he goes, to each thing he picks up, to the twitch of muscle in his face, watching like a hawk. it actually comes as a jolt of surprise, when the bahari hops up to his side, and touches at his arm, and Andyr jumps, some. oh. hi.

Adrien's talking, and he's absorbing it, but his eyes are dead set on that tray of instruments, blinking rapidly a few times. any other moment in his life, and other time tumbled together in the hell of the last six years, if any of those came this close to him, and there wasn't something strapping him into a bolted down surface, he'd be jerking away, and either attacking the first closest body, or running for the door. it takes an incredibly amount of will to refrain from either.

he nods about the MIDs, ignoring the issue of permanence for the moment. they'll put it on him one way other another, like the anklet tracer from Hapsburg that's still attached to his leg, though the mechanics had been melted. ]

It's fine. Let's just do it.

[ he does appreciate the honesty, and it'll raise his opinion of the man, later, after, but right now, he's too caught up in his mind, spiraling

the little paw bumping at his arm. oh, right. the fuzzy. blinking down to him, it takes a second or two, but he flashes the cat a little half-smile, eventually, and reaches up to scratch at his ears. ]

[ Ear rub achievement unlocked!

This makes for a happy tracker and a very soft, low rumble begins to issue from the bahari's throat. His eyes half close and he pushes his head this way and that into Andyr's touch.

Adrien watches the display without comment, giving the pair a moment and taking his time gathering the equipment necessary to draw blood. Needle, hub, antiseptic wipe and vial.

Once he's got it all prepped, and Courser has gotten a decent amount of ear rub (it will never be enough for the tracker) Adrien clears his throat and holds the equipment out towards Andyr. ]

If you still want to do it yourself, I can hand these to you as you need them. Might be a bit easier than trying to juggle it all and keep your draw arm still enough.

But you're on your own for telling him you've got to stop petting. His 'woe is me eyes' are deadly. [ The words were delivered in a perfect deadpan tone, which might make it hard to tell if the doctor was joking or not. ]

[ he likes the cat, the cat relaxes him, but he doesn't relax him quite that much. not enough that he'd hand over this whole process. ]

It's better if I do it.

[ even if he did trust Adrien enough to start letting him put needles in him, there's still the kneejerk responses to violence he has, and he doubts this friendly compliance thing is going to last long if Andyr snaps and punches him in the throat. He also doubts Adrien will survive it, if he snaps and punches him in the throat. That's usually the purpose. He tends to go for kill first and foremost.

lifting his hand away from the cat, he gives Courser an apologetic shrug. ]
I'll pet you much as you want after, okay? [ told him as he's peeling the bulky guard's jacket off his shoulders and arms, shrugging it off somewhere behind him. what's under is a loose sort of smock top, made from a material pretty similar to hospital gowns, though a bit softer. Like the coat, it's stained with splatters of blood, here and there, easier to see on the light grey of it than the black of the jacket he'd had on before. there's not really any damage to the garment, save in a couple places, but whatever injury he'd sustained earlier has stopped bleeding by now - nothing fresh. ]

Just handle the vial. [ he tells adrien, while shuffling the right sleeve up on his shoulder and out of the way, reaching for the tourniquet on the tray. It's a bit of a hassle, one handed, but he gets it looped on there well enough, with an end sticking out he can grab with teeth and pull free, when he needs to. Arm laid out against a knee, he flexes his fingers on that hand, opening and closing, to get blood flowing, while the antiseptic wipe is scrubbed over the inside of his elbow.

There's already a cluster of pinprick scars there, over the larger veins, and the same sort of pattern on his wrist, repeated on the other arm as well. it takes a lot to really leave scars on a body with his kind of regeneration abilities, but shoving needles into him every other day for six years? sometimes leaving them in for three weeks at a time? that'll do it. at least the one good thing is that it gives Andyr a clear marker for where to push the needle in. he seems to handle that part alright - leveling it and pushing in shallowly, a bit of adjusting, but it's steady, and there's no flinch or even twitch in Andyr's features for the sting of it. ]

Vial. [ he tells him, once he's sure it's settled right, and he tugs the tourniquet free, once it's all connected and flowing. ]

[ It was true, Courser was good for relaxation. It was how he'd come to be in Adrien's possession in the first place, a last ditch, desperate effort to get Adrien to stop throwing himself at three thousand foot krakens.

This didn't mean that Courser didn't attempt a bit of a crestfallen look when Andyr stopped petting but rather than jumping down and going away, the bahari simply lay down on the bed and set his chin on his paws as he watched. Holding the vial in one hand, Adrien reached out with the other and gave Courser's tail a gentle tug as he let Andyr manage the needle and hub.

The scarring and marks were noted from out of the corner of the doctor's eye and he made mental notes to add to Andyr's file. Mostly strongly worded suggestions to the rest of the medical staff that if/when they treated the young man to do so carefully as to reduce the chance to triggering a trauma based response.

He'd leave the details that he'd learned (such as they were) out of the file. Andyr could choose what he did and did not wish to share with the others.

Handing over the vial, Adrien waited patiently as it was filled and would then trade Andyr a gauze pad and band-aid (if he wished to use it) for the vial. Usually he would then mark the vial with name and information but as he'd promised they would process the blood immediately and together, so he simply set the vial into a metal container on the tray. ]

I can do respiration from here but blood pressure and heart rate are going to require a measure of hands on. [ He said, again being direct but giving Andyr the call on how they proceeded. ]

[ Vial filled, Andyr takes the gauze, but waves off the band-aid. It'll heal in a minute or so, no need for it, and he'd feel ridiculous walking around with a little band-aid for just a needle prick. pulling the needle free, he presses the gauze pad over the area and hands off the needle, holding pressure for about ten seconds, before tossing the pad to the metal tray as well. it's likely already mostly closed.

Eyes follow the vial on the tray, as if he's worried someone might come by and snatch it, but after a moment, he's settled with it's placement, and focuses back on Adrien.

Blood pressure, heart rate. He knows what both of those entail, considers what the contact would be and tries to decide if he's alright with it. ]

Tell me what you're doing before you do it.

[ Half for Adrien's own security, as a hand going somewhere he's not expecting it could be bad with his reflexes and how incredibly on edge he is. the cat's a comfortable presence next to him, but the longer this goes on, the more and more he starts to notice things around the lab that he'd seen in Hapsburg, or hear bits of conversation that remind him of something from his homeworld. He's doing his best to keep his eyes straight forward, watching some blank spot on Adrien's chest, and chant something in his head to cover up the noise.

Flavors of yoghurt. Types of fish. Morse code translations. He'd had a lot of time to read, in his cell, and the encyclopedia was one of the books he was allowed. a slow exhale leaves him. ]

If I say stop, it's a good idea to stop. [ a pause, a glance from that blank spot on Adrien's shirt, up to his eyes, and he nods, assenting quietly. ] Go ahead.

[ Adrien waited Andyr out, as if he had all the time in the world. The young man was going to run into him out in the hallway and believe he found his evil twin or something when he discovered had temperamental the doctor could be.

As he waited, he did count the respiration, making a note on the chart with a small adjustment for anxiety. It was a good number, if the others followed suit he certainly couldn't say Andyr was out of shape.

Setting the pad down on the bed next to Courser, who hadn't moved from where he was within reach of Andyr, Adrien shook his sleeve back to access his MID for a time keeper. He then held his hand out but didn't reach for the younger man. ]

I need access to your radial pulse, [ he said but leaving it to Andyr to give him his wrist.

So long as things moved along, pulse was taken with minimal fuss and minimal contact before Andyr had his arm back. More notes (elevated but again adjusted for anxiety) it was blood pressure time.

This was going to be a little more invasive, so to speak. Picking up the cuff, Adrien expected Andyr had to know the procedure but he went through it, more as a method to focus the younger man and also to keep things quiet, calm and in Andyr's control. ]

This goes on your upper arm and it's going to squeeze. Stethoscope goes against the pulse in your elbow but I'll have to wrap my fingers around the joint to keep it in contact with your skin.

[ These were both going to be restrictive sensations, particularly the fingers on the elbow. While it would risk getting the wrong point for a read, Adrien was already mentally considering how to work it so Andyr could hold the scope in place if necessary. ]

[ He's quiet through most all of it, hands over his wrist when asked for, finding that spot on Adrien's shirt again to watch. Try to count threads from a distance, maybe. When he's told about the blood pressure process, he nods, while Adrien talks, signalling, yes, he knows how this works.

Tugging the wrap up on his arm, he does need some help tightening it down, as it's a little hard to get it tight enough one handed, but doesn't mind the assistance. Adrien's good about telling him what happens when, and making sure to keep his distance otherwise, and Andyr's appreciative for it. Doesn't mean he trusts him, but it does mean he hates him less, and considering most everyone starts off in the 'hate' category for Andyr, that's good news.

Then there's the issue of the stethoscope, and the hand at his arm. After a moment of staring at the device in question, and down at Adrien's hands, he nods, holding his arm out to let the man do what he needs to, trying to keep the fingers on that hand from fidgeting much while he's taking his blood pressure.

To busy himself, his eyes explore over the personal looking stethoscope, noting that it's different from the others he'd seen in the room before, which he double checks by glancing over a shoulder (and immediately regretting looking at the room at large - too many white coats, too many IV bags, too many beeping machines and bright overhead lights). ]

Yours is different. [ he turns back to ask, nodding at the instrument. ] Where'd you get it?

[ It was easier when Andyr allowed him to do his job and in return Adrien made certain to keep his hands where the younger man could see them, at all times and to only touch as he'd explained before hand. No odd shifts or too closer movements.

The cuff was starting it's slow, inexorable grip, which Adrien was assuming Andyr did not particularly appreciate. However, as the young man seemed to be trying his hardest to keep himself distracted the doctor was willing to help out where he could.

So far he'd barely spoken to anyone, outside the one person who also came from the Neheda about his previous life. The most he mentioned was the fact that Courser had been a gift and little beyond that. He didn't invite questions or encourage conversation on the subject.

But ... give a little to gain a bit. If it helped keep this entire process as relaxed as it could be managed, he'd stick a crowbar in his mouth and pry out some words. ]

It was a gift. [ He explained, glancing down at where his initials were carved into the metal and turning it slightly so Andyr could see the double "A". ] From one of the officers I served with on my prior ship. It was one of the first I ever received and decidedly more useful than the jock-strap I got from them.

Err at least at the time.

[ The jock-strap had proved singularly useful at a later date. But he wasn't going down that particular rabbit hole just yet. ]

[ As the stethoscope is turned, Andyr's head tilts, glancing down the read the letters, and realizing he doesn't actually know this guy's name. He's assuming 'AA' are his initials, but doesn't bother voicing it.

At the mention of jock-strap, though, a sharp snort pulls from him, with a jerked motion from his shoulders that might have been a laugh. the corner of his lips quirk some, and he arches a brow to the doctor. ]

What you do in your personal time is none of my business.

[ Maybe humor. It's at least a little less tense - not just silence and stilted demands.

With the momentary lull of action, the arm not occupied reaches over to tap a fingertip at one of Courser's paws, as he'd rolled around the idea of what living on a spaceship for your lifestyle would be like. Can't argue with the view. but on the other hand, it's a lot of people shoved into a space that's not quite big enough to be able to get away.

And people always find a way to be terrible. ]
prorenataa: (you are giving me a fucking headache)

[ Courser immediately lifted his head and his muzzle dropped down to nose at the fingers playing with his paws. His feelers swept forward, intending to lightly graze Andyr's wrist, matching the attentive position of large, colorful ears.

Adrien's attention was only the gauge of the sphygmomanometer. He wanted to get this in one shot, rather than cause Andyr to have to sit through it again. The numbers came up and he released the tension of the cuff but left it for Andyr to actually remove the equipment.

No unnecessary touching. ]

Damn straight.

[ He agreed with Andyr's comment about 'personal time' but there was very little heat behind the words and Adrien was more focused on making notes on the data pad. When he had everything written out, he spun the pad around and presented it to Andyr so the young man could read everything written down so far:

Name: Aɴᴅʏʀ Pʀɪɴᴄᴇ
Intake: A date that probably means nothing
Rank: There will be one
Species: Humanoid
Blood base: TBD
Blood type: TBD
Pathogens:TBD
Baseline Vitals:
  • HR: 60
  • BP: 118/70
  • RRR: 13
  • Temp: 97.7

  • [ provided he got the data pad back, Adrien would then step back and reach for the vial of blood. Taking it in his hand, he motioned towards a small section of the MedBay set off the main treatment area. ]

We'll need to head to the lab, to run the blood sample next.

[ he's grateful for that, and slides the cuff off on his own, handing it over as he leans forward to peer at the datapad, a hand distractedly entertaining Courser for the moment. all seems normal, nothing strange there. the 'rank' bit seems interesting, but something he'll worry about later.

nodding, the datapad's handed back, approved, and andyr's eyes immediately snap to the vial of blood again, when adrien reaches for it, watching where it goes carefully, like it's one of those 'guess which cup the coin is under' games. hopping down from the edge of the table, he's following close behind, eyes wanting to skim around, but he's more concerned with keeping them trained on where the vial's going.

once they're in the sectioned off area, he pulls up a chair or a stool from somewhere, close to where adrien is working, and settles in it to watch all that's going on with the tests. eventually, speaking up curiously. ]

So is that it for the physical? [ if so, that's the shortest and least invasive one he's ever had.

    not that he's complaining. ]

[ Setting the datapad down, the blood carefully perched atop it, Adrien began to move about the lab, warming up the machines he'd need. The blood analyzer was already up and running, given the intake work they were doing but there was another machine he turned on and began to prime.

Courser had followed along as well and now sat by Andyr's stool, though his eyes followed his companion's movements. His small head tilted to the side, colorful ears perked curiously as if he wasn't quite sure what his papa was up to.

Head down, Adrien remarked over his shoulder. ]

So long as your blood doesn't turn up something of concern, yes.

[ One good thing about a lack of bedside manner, Adrien tended to get the work done with little fuss and maximum efficiency.

Right now he was walking around the room, obviously looking for something. Eventually he used a bit of paper off another piece of equipment, walking it over to the device he'd set to warming up as they walked in. Finally he looked up and over at Andyr, pointing to the device. ]

This is a piece of equipment with a long name. Easiest way to explain it is it neutralizes and dissolves small amounts of biohazard waste. Mostly sample sizes, nothing big but it can handle the excess blood in the vial when we're done.

[ He held out the paper and motioned to a bio-secure panel that would allow an item to be placed within, then need to be secured before the device switched over to dispose of the material.

For the record, that dual panel set up was a safety measure. It wouldn't work unless both doors were closed. No risk of accidentally dissolving a finger please. ]

Give it a shot, see how it works.

[ there's a blink down to the cat, but his attention turns straight back to Adrien's hands and what he's doing. when he said watch, he really meant watch. like a fucking hawk.

when looking at the sample, it ought to seem mostly human, but the KN gene tends to skew everything a bit. it's free, rapid mutation, and constantly evolving. that being why new samples have to be taken for each batch of iterations the Houses made. lose the Template, and the line's discontinued. it also can't be preserved or used as a serum. only survives inside the host body it evolved with.

but, if anything, he's completely disease free. that is the one miracle of it that the rest of the world had wanted to utilize so badly, with the human genome so weak. if andyr's ever sick, it'd lasted for a day or so max, when he'd been inactive. he hasn't had a single illness since it did activate. ]

So all the people stripping down out there are just doing it for fun?

[ said with a quirked eyebrow, as he goes about checking out the device Adrien had pointed out. still keeping his attention mostly on what adrien's doing. every physical he'd had ever had started and ended with him stripped, then again, they cared more for convenience than his dignity. so there's a suspicion Adrien skipped something in there, maybe for his sake, or maybe because he's just a lazy doctor, but either way, Andyr's grateful.

nodding at the instructions he's given, he takes the paper offered and goes about giving the machine a try. both doors shut with the bit of paper inside, andyr blinks at it a moment, before resolutely pushing the activation button, watching through the window as it rapidly dissolved inside. Oh. ]

[ Adrien glanced over towards where some patients were being asked to disrobe and after he watched for a moment, he gave a small shrug and turned back to his review of Andyr's blood. ]

There may be reason from the initial exam to warrant a more extensive physical. You have all four limbs, two eyes, one mouth and a nose. While you have contusions, you're dragging around evidence of having been held captive, by the way we should remove those before you leave.

I could perform a more intimate exam for evidence of recent trauma but there is nothing we can do here in this world to address a crime back in your own. An STI from such an event, if one has occurred, will show on your blood sample so I was thinking to avoid the physical, unless you have reason to request the physical?

Back to contusions and lacerations, none of which require stitches and given your strong disinclination to physical contact my intention was to provide you with the supplies to clean and disinfect the wounds yourself. Again, unless you would like to request I do it?

You aren't limping or exhibiting any evidence to suggest broken bones and ultimately your vitals suggest that you are in a state of health that would be admirable to any humanoid on this ship.

[ He paused, waited and nodded back to the main room. ]

If you've changed your mind and believe you are being cheated of a delightful experience, we can run the full monty but quite honestly I don't require it to diagnose anything I can't see with my eyes, deduct from the statistics I have and confirm from your blood sample.

    But hey, it's your call?

    [ Harumph, lazy indeed. ]

    No.

[ the very immediate response to 'a more intimate exam', because everyone can keep all of their extremities and tools out of his person, thank you very fucking much. he already knows there was crime and recent trauma in his world, he doesn't need other people digging evidence out of him for it. granted, it's been a couple years since anyone'd had the balls to try that one in particular with him, adrien wouldn't find anything.

not that anyone in his world would care.

not anyone with a voice enough to do anything about it, at least. he's gone a bit blank while that train of thought is running through his head, staring blankly at the dissolving device he'd just been testing, before he blinks rapidly several times, and comes back to himself. ]

No, I don't need it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna be stopped on my way out for skipping the 'turn your head and cough' experience.

[ though he is glad to hear adrien will be helping him get the cuffs off. much as he's used to them, they're a constant source of tension for him. so long as that weight's on his wrists and his ankles, Andyr still feels like he's at war. ]

    So. Any pathogens?

    Didn't think so.

[ Adrien said in a dry tone before he turned back to his analysis work. He could practically feel the young man vibrating with the need to get out of all of this, sooner rather than later and the doctor didn't blame him. Hell, all these people? Adrien wanted out of here sooner rather than later, however he understood the importance of his job and he wasn't going to do it slip shod. ]

None that I can see, I just need to confirm one thing.

[ He remarked. He was referencing that skewing as a result of the KN gene. Given the properties it imposed upon the situation, Adrien had to take a moment to double and triple check that he had a clear mapping of how the skewing worked, to confirm that the situation was not capable of delivering a nasty surprise down the road.

Best that no one discuss how and why he's learned to look at an understand the destructive properties of what displays as perfectly normal.

One last check and he lifted his head and nodded. ]

No pathogens. I do have to make note of the genetic component, that it exists and is the root cause for some skewed variables with some of your numbers.

    Otherwise.

[ As he'd been talking, Adrien had gathered the vial of blood and now he pulled the slide he'd prepared and been reviewing, as well as the materials he'd used to prepare the slide. He presented all of this to Andyr to place in the disposal unit. ]

Take care of this and we'll get those cuffs off and you can be on your way.

[ Just the mention of 'genetic component' has Andyr tensing, eyes snapping down to the slide under the scope, and back to the doctor's face. exactly the thing he didn't want being recorded.

it's all too easy to flashback to the crowded clinic in low town, where their father had taken them when jehanne had caught some kind of flu. he remembers overhearing the mumbling of the doctor and his father, but the only word that sticks out in his mind, now, was KN gene. that'd been the last time he saw his twin sister. they were nine.

reaching out his hand, it slaps, palm down, over the datapad Adrien had been filling out his results on, letting the slide and blood vial and all of that be ignored for the moment. this is more important. ]

    No.

[ all the softness that'd come back in small moments over the last twenty or so minutes dissipates in that singular moment, and Andyr looks ready to murder again. ]

Nothing about the gene. At all.

[ whatever else he wants to do, put that he's not human, that he has some kind of weird condition, make something else up - he doesn't care. but there'd better be nothing about his genetic anomaly going into a computer system accessed by scientists and doctors.

by anyone, really. it's already obvious enough there's something wrong with him, just by the ports at his back, impossible to hide with how the come up onto the back of his neck, but letting even the chance that someone realizes they might be able to make a miracle cure out of him is absolutely out of the question. ]
    prorenataa: (what is your damage)

[ Adrien inhaled and let out a slow, steady breath. It was possible he was counting backwards from ten; in Latin.

When he was finished, he looked over Andyr. His expression was not intended to be unkind but it was direct. ]

You need to understand something. [ He said, in a soft but firm tone. ]

I am not the only physician on this ship. I am not even one of the senior physicians on this ship. There is a high likelihood that depending upon the circumstances, even if you asked for me specifically, rank could be pulled and another physician will treat you.

[ Just to make things clear. ]

If that happens and that physician comes across this genetic abnormality and discovers there is no mention of it in your file, they will investigate and they will be a lot more invasive then, than I am being now.

[ Given that Adrien had some of the story and well, his own closet was full of skeletons, let's be real here. He had no need or desire to dig into the skeletons in other peoples' closets. ]

So you have two choices. We put in vague, benign mention of it now and it ceases to be a thing. Or when someone realizes there is information mission, that someone, who is not me, is going to get a lot more involved in your file.

    But it's your call.

[ ultimatums. how many times has he heard something like this before? cooperate now, or you'll be in a lot of pain for it later. we're being kind to you now because we are benevolent, but if you refuse this chance, you'll have a much less pleasant alternative. the only one he'd ever trusted in taking an offer like that was Alvary.

and this fuck is not Alva. ]

    Nothing. At all.

[ he's grinding out, half wanting to just smash the datapad under his hand right now, but it'd be petty and antagonizing. more than he's currently being. if it were hapsburg, he'd have already done it. if it were hapsburg, he wouldn't even have gone this far without several guards and heavy restraints.

you start making compromises with your freedom, and they never stop. that is what andyr knows. better to suffer the worse end of it and say you stood your ground than just lay down and allow it. ]

It's no one's business what's in my blood, so long as it's not hurting anyone. Looking for pathogens was what you said, right? [ that's what you told him, Adrien, that's exactly it. protection for the crew. a genetic component isn't contagious, and someone would have to assault him to even get it out of him. ]

It's not a disease, it's not anything detrimental to me, it's not a risk. So then what the fuck is this?
