[Aubrey has never seen so much unprotected water in one place. It's even more mind-boggling to realize the "pool" is meant for people to swim in, not drink. (People do warn him about this.) He spends a grand total of ten minutes debating whether or not he should indulge in "swimming" before he turns to find a swim suit to change in.
It's delightfully guilty, at first, when he dips his feet into the water. The feeling becomes even worse when he fully submerges himself into the pool, because this is the absolute worst thing he could do back home but his grin is wide and jovial. He doesn't know which feeling is stronger: the awe or the guilt. He doesn't know how to swim, so he spends most of his time in the shallow end.
His joy is short-lived.
He doesn't know how long he stands in the shallow end of the pool, water lapping at his arms and shoulders, and doesn't know what to do with the empty expanse that's opened up in his chest. He's lost, tumbling through space where oxygen can't exist but pools of water do. They'll both drown him. What is he doing? Why is he here? What does it matter if he is, anyway, when he can't change anything back home?
He barely manages to climb out of the pool.
Aubrey ends up sitting at the edge of pool with his towel around his shoulders. He stares at the water, wondering how something that's supposed to be so good could make him feel like the universe is set on crushing him. It serves him right, doesn't it? For taking water for granted.]
( the sun in flight - hallway )
Where do you think they come from?
[He can't deny his own curiosity at the little creatures. He hasn't dared to go near one of them since being bitten, the fingers on his right hand still held traces of the glow.
They way is blocked. It's luck (good or bad) that has him with company of another person on the ship. It's good, being able to talk to someone in person. He can't say for the same for the other person. There are too many of the little things floating around the hallway for it to be safe, and Aubrey doesn't know the ship well enough yet to know if there's an alternate route to the mess hall.]
I don't know about you... but I don't think I wanna know what we'll look like if we go down that way.
