February Event: OOC Plotting Post
Greetings! Over the last week, many characters have discussed how (or whether) to investigate the distant life signs found by Wanda, Erik, and Flynn's Cerebro device. Others have concerned themselves with the increasing maintenance issues plaguing the station here and now. On February 10, this month's event will be getting underway with a discovery that concerns both interests: a cascading set of system failures that requires resources from elsewhere in Avagi to repair. |
The Crisis |
The arrival of the player characters—both from Thisavrou and the portals—has placed a strain on previously-inactive systems. While sizeable steps have been taken to fix or improve the lived-in spaces, Life Support has always maintained a more delicate balance, kept working as much by taskbot functions as by the few individuals who've taken up the job. On February 10, this balance will tip toward the worse. The barely-visible mold emerging from the vents will give way to a torrent of dark smoke: airborne toxins released as the filtration systems fail. Short-term efforts toward repair will require a full reset of station power, and once shut down, key systems will have difficulty coming back online. This will affect heat, air quality, and electricity through the entire local area. Over the next couple days, in-depth investigating can reveal the fault. To retain a breathable environment, Avagi's systems filter and store toxins: both those created naturally by its inhabitants and the more hazardous byproducts of power generation. Normally, these chemicals would be removed or purified—and systems for both do exist within the station. But the storm outside has prevented venting out to space for the last three centuries, and Avagi's purification modules rely on the presence of a rare crystal: once, imported from the nearby planet of Kauto, and currently... run out. |
Stay or Go? |
If a more numerous group has stayed alive elsewhere on Avagi, these problems must be ones they've overcome. More, investigation into Sanitation's backstock reveals shelves empty of not just the vital crystals, but the containers they were kept in. At some point in the past few centuries, someone removed these items from this region—presumably, for use elsewhere. It stands to reason that these hidden neighbors might have the answer to your problems. So who's going to reach out? At minimum, the journey will take several days, making it advisable to send a larger group. However, many people may be reluctant to leave their homes unguarded. While the purification crystals will be needed to provide a longterm fix, smaller efforts at repair can make a difference in the shorter term: both in securing liveable spaces for those who choose not to travel and in that ensuring vital spaces like the Greenery survive. While we are not requiring formal signups, we do encourage players to think carefully about whether their characters would stay or go. Both the home and away teams will face different challenges as things intensify, and after February 20th, it will become impossible to change groups. To reiterate: while travel between teams will be possible for the first week or so of journeying, both groups will be physically cut off from one another after that point. The character base will reunite in March. |
Upcoming Dangers |
Those who choose to stay will do so under extremely difficult conditions. Those who travel will (of course!) be encountering their own. The explosion that tore apart the Ingress Complex didn't just vent most of its inhabitants into the void. It let the void in. The energy-draining storm that surrounds Avagi has penetrated wide swaths of the interior, and a several-day journey will stretch out considerably longer as characters work to circumnavigate the lethal zones. More, proximity to the storm can have unfortunate effects on even the most cautious. If you are interested in signing up your character for a storm effect, comment at the header below. More details on both sets of experiences will be provided with the log. The player characters are neither the only ones to live on Avagi nor the only ones to travel through its halls, and they may come across signs of those who've come before them. They will also encounter much more dangerous hazards. On February 20, a discovery will be made that poses a severe danger to both the home and away teams. While information on this threat won't be publicly posted until the second log, we are looking for volunteers willing to accept a character death for a unique role in kicking off this portion of the plot. If you would like to volunteer your character, comment here. While not strictly necessary for the plot to proceed, we feel these volunteers could add significantly to the experience. |
If you have any questions, drop them off for us below! This is meant to function as an OOC post for both logs in the event, and we encourage players to make their own plotting comments as well. The first log will be posted in two days, on February 10. |
Signups: Storm Effects
To sign your character up for a storm effect, please comment below! Note that this option is specifically available to the away team, or those who travel with them for a duration. Signups will remain open throughout the month.
WOWIE IGNORE THAT I POSTED UNDER THE WRONG TOP-LEVEL FOR A BIT HMMMMM
cter Name:=)Interest in the storms: They're going to generally be cautious about the storm since they remember what happened last time, but Chara's instinct for self-preservation is, how shall we say, next to nonexistent? If they see anything or anyone of interest in the storm at all, they'll probably decide it's worth the risk if it means investigating. This thing of interest could be like, Literally Just A Flower and they'd be willing to poke and prod around, whoops.
OOC limits?: Last time they got storm effects they lost the power of speech. Since I've already run with that, I'd like to avoid that particular repercussion again!
we saw nothing~
Memory
The rippling shadows visible through the glass merge and shatter without end, making any number of shapes that might have drawn Chara's focus. Whatever they saw was enough to cause them to look closer—and in particular, to prompt associations of someone or something that matters deeply to them.
As they watch, memories of this subject are at the front of their mind. And as the storm's exaustion creeps in, it poisons the memory from the inside out. They may find themselves disgusted, tired, or hateful towards whatever brought them comfort—or, if the memory was already negative, may find themselves drowning in the sentiments it provokes. By the time they look away, all feelings on the matter have been replaced with an apathy so intense they see no point in even thinking on it. For the duration of the event, they will no longer be able to access any memories of this topic. If prompted by others, they will be overwhelmed by a hateful indifference: even if what these people say is true, why should they care?
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Chara travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!

Interest in the storms: Not inclined to really observe up close, but thinks her hardsuit will protect her so wouldn't be as bothered by wandering in.
OOC limits?: No death or memory alteration (because she's already questioning the latter) plz

Humanity
The presence of the storms is tangibly tiring, and at first, Nova may think she is only suffering exhaustion. A weight in her limbs. A numbness in her face. A sick energy that seems to seep into her veins, filtering in with every breath she takes—no matter how clean the air. But the feeling lasts even when she gains distance, and on removing her hardsuit, she will discover she has been changed underneath.
Her face is distorted. Her skin, hair, and eyes are dulled. While the degree of transformation is up to you, she would find her flesh toughened and gnarled in ways that match no known form of human life. If injured, she would bleed only sluggishly, and that a dull grey. More, a sense of strangeness would settle over her when looking at the others in the group: as if even those of her (former?) species are foreign and unknowable.
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Nova travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!

Yo whān is Nova a baby Mirtos or
(She has a Ploiatos scar if that's a factor)
no subject
In Nova's case, her indirect interaction and observation drained away part of her humanity, but the change would not progress, and involve no more than what was previously described. There is, however, visual similarity to the early stages of a Mirtos transformation—so you would be welcome to have her or others confuse the two ICly!
The presence of a Ploiatos scar would not affect her current status, but it would mark her as potential kin to the existing Mirtos. She would find herself more frequently targeted by them, and if killed, would degenerate rapidly into a full Mirtos herself.

Thank you 😀

Interest in the storms: Frisk is going to be cautious, since they remember the effects from the simulation, but they also are really really bad at self-preservation so their definition of 'cautious' is 'get a longer stick to poke it with'. If someone needs help or they see something that has the remotest chance of being helpful, they'll wade in to investigate.
OOC limits?: I'd like to avoid a repeat of their blindness, but otherwise I'm open to anything!
no subject
Isolation
Frisk may have gone to the aid of another, or be searching for a means to save them all. For whatever reason, their explorations take them closer to the sealed barriers, and they can feel the weight of the storms pressing in from the outside. They even think that they can hear it. A screaming, voiceless hunger, constricting around them in the dark. Alone.
They can run—even to others. Their friends may speak to them or offer comfort. But Frisk will be unable to perceive it. For the duration of the event Frisk will be unable to physically feel the warmth or touch of other beings. Voices may be heard, but they will be distorted, as if through water: something distant and unreachable. While the severity is up to your discretion, it should be noted that this does not apply to other perceptions: Frisk may touch, hear, or experience the environment around them just fine. It's only in connecting to other creatures that they find themselves alone.
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Frisk travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!

Interest in the storms: If someone dared him to go up close and personal with a storm, he would. If someone told him not to get close, he'd probably lean toward it just to be contrary. He's ... not that good at self-preservation.
OOC limits?: If possible, I'd like to avoid extreme body horror like... idk extra limbs or something like that. Sensory deprivation is fine.

Voice
Sideswipe may be acting on a dare, or simply have strayed too far from the group's side. For whatever reason, his explorations take him closer to the windows blocking out the storms. There, he finds himself paralyzed by fear. It may be tied to a personal memory or sentiment, or merely the perception of an utter void pressing in around. He can't run. He can't scream. Soon, he can't speak at all.
Whether he is helped away or manages to overcome his terror long enough to flee, Sideswipe will find the fear isn't left behind so easily. Every time he tries to speak or vocalize, a flash of the same fear consumes him. Something is waiting out there in the dark, and if he talks, it will listen. He can't speak—can't make any vocalization until he knows it's gone.
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Sideswipe travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!

One quick question: Does this only apply to verbal and vocalizations, or does it effect text too?

Interest in the storms: As a scientist it's a given that Alfor is curious about the storm and what it might be. He's heard about things regarding it and from what he's studied from the observation deck it's something he knows to be cautious of. If there's a chance of better understanding what it is this storm is, he'd want to try to find out, but he'll weigh the risks, especially since he has his daughter and the rest of the team to be concerned about.
OOC limits?: Iiii don't believe so.
no subject
Empathy
As Alfor moves to investigate the storm, concern for others is at the front of his mind. He cares about his daughter and his team—about learning enough to help the people who live here. He cares, and so he risks himself, despite the danger. The exhausted weariness that comes with proximity to the storms is something to work through, not flinch away from. He won't be sure precisely when the exhaustion creeps inside.
When Alfor looks up from his work, he will have no trouble perceiving those around him. It will, however, be more difficult to understand them—or remember why he cared. While this loss does not inherently compel any harmful or malicious acts, for the duration of the event, Alfor will find it difficult to emotionally consider to the circumstances of others. This may express as disinterest, incomprehension, or oblivious cruelty—whatever you would prefer to play.
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Alfor travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!

-okay, I do have a question! Since he's taking a shot at studying the storm, would there be any readings he might get from taking such, like energy or thermal signatures...noise? Wait, space, so no noise. Okay, scratch noise. But anything else!
no subject
no subject
He'd try to get any sort of energy output, radioactivity, composite readings, thermal activity. Anything that might suggest it's alive, maybe. I'm pretending I know how to science.
no subject
The longer he uses his devices for this purpose, the more he might pick up an unexpected reading of his own. The armor is losing power at a startling rate. In particular, it's being consumed by the sensory and computing suite. The storms don't merely lack energy—they actively pull it from things and creatures nearby. Especially those capable of granting them attention.

Interest in the storms: He's gonna try to be careful since he's been affected before, but when it comes down to it he's way too curious for his own good and is probably gonna be like... poking a little closer to them at a time, because he makes good life choices.
OOC limits?: Last time he went blind, so I'd like to avoid a repeat of that! Also memory loss/alteration would fuck with him a lot so maybe not that either :')

Courage
While aware of the danger, Ginko's interest in the storms at first overpowers his fear. At a distance, he will observe the shifts of light with no effect. When he draws closer, he may feel weary, but no worse—and certainly not enough to dissuade his curiosity. This is hardly the worst circumstance he's been exposed to, and by the time he presses properly against the glass, Ginko will feel relatively sure of his own safety.
This confidence fades quickly: as Ginko locks eyes with a face beyond the barrier. Looking back, he will be unable to recall its shape or features, whether it was a being composed of the storms or just enveloped by them. He remembers that it was drawn and skeletal, hungry and absolutely empty. And he knows that it is coming.
Metal warps. Glass can shatter. All structures corrode with time, and when torn away from the view, Ginko is painfully, sharply aware of just how fragile the walls are. No one and nothing can protect them, and he will be overcome by a lasting sense of fear. At your discretion, this may express as anything from gibbering panic to paranoia, but neither logic nor reassurance will assuage his terror for the duration of the event.
The loss may begin anytime between the 10th and 19th—whenever Ginko travels close enough to the storms to perceive them. It will last until the end of the month, and at your option, may persist to a lesser degree after. If you have any questions or adjustments you would like to ask about, feel free!
now in the right place
Interest in the storms: She's going to find the storm unsettling, but that might be her own danger sense pinging her. Not that she won't want to watch the storm, though. She has no clue how dangerous it actually is. I mean, it's a storm. What's the worst that can happen, right?
OOC limits?: I don't mind putting her in danger, but nothing too life threatening. It'd be interesting if she had to rely on others until all symptoms left her. She's not the best at making friends, so something that'll force her to actually interact outside of the small circle of friends she's built for herself.
Essentially, nothing that'll kill her.
