AUGUST TEST DRIVE MEME

ABOARD THE MOIRA

Whether adjusting to space travel has been difficult or not, there is always something to be done. From working to leisure, the Moira offers a multitude of opportunities to get to know your crewmates a bit better. Exploration of the ship is highly encouraged, but as another planet grows closer to being docked, things start to get a little hectic. You'll notice a slight change in the artificial gravity as the Moira is pulled into the planet's gravitational field; however, more noticeable changes can be found in the overall morale as you prepare to descend.

☄ on the aft:

Offering an unobstructed view, it's quite easy to see stars that are still light years away. Like your own personal observatory, things are relatively quiet since other members are busy. While visiting, your steps may feel lighter as the ship's gravity is affected most here, but don't worry! The barrier surrounding the aft will keep you from floating away. Take note: if you happen to find yourself alone, no matter how brief, you may hear a distant echo — like a voice calling to you. For the most part, it's harmless. However, those curious enough to attempt to heed those words may find themselves suddenly jettisoned into space through a momentary lapse in the Moira's safety systems.

Hopefully you're wearing your thermals! The MID relay will alert the ship of this emergency, but who knows how long it will take for someone to retrieve you.

☄ in the mess hall:

It's breakfast time! On the buffet lining the back wall, you'll find an assortment of hurriedly prepared foods, but it's not the rations you've been accustomed to since the last port. There are stacks of green pancakes that taste like stale yet metallic bread. Are those eggs? Yes. Do they taste good? Probably not. Since supplies are scarce, there isn't much else to eat. The water might seem a bit brown, but is that really water you're drinking? After a while, depending on how much you've drank, you start to feel lightheaded... That's some strong space liquor right there.

☄ on your own:

There are plenty of other communal areas on the ship to explore! Pick a place, and see where it takes you.

PLANET EXPLORATION

Welcome to Hyacintho!

WARNINGS for possible psychological trauma, suffocation, and hallucinations.

From the outside, Hyacintho appears to be devoid of natives. Its landscape is sparse of vegetation with many slow-flowing streams tinted a murky blue. Craggy rock formations jut up randomly from the ground, hinting at abrupt development and are razor-sharp to the touch. Upon further exploration, dome-like structures can be found and appear to be abandoned settlements. Some are smaller and clustered close to the ground while others are elevated and connected by swinging bridges. Watching your MID here is critical; it monitors atmospheric composition with steady beeps that signal hazardous conditions. Staying on Hyacintho's surface for extended periods of time is ill-advised.

☄ the dormant volcanoes:

Scoping Hyacintho's peculiar topography leads to the discovery of inactive volcanoes and lava tubes. Some are easily accessible while others take more effort to reach—it's a steep climb to the vent. The ground shifts under your feet and can make walking difficult. Yet, the closer you come to a particular one, you may notice subtle changes in temperature and the air smelling faintly of sulfur. Perhaps this planet isn't as latent as you first thought.

Around midday, vibrations are unexpectedly felt and whatever light from Hyacintho's suns is blotted out by ashy clouds the same color as the ground. Small pockets of blue lava seep from those sharp rock formations, and that light sulfuric smell has now become increasingly overwhelming. Time to make a quick escape back to the Moira!

☄ the delirium:

When something terrible happens, sometimes it leaves a trace, a wound that acts as a knot between two timelines. It's like an echo repeated over and over, waiting to be heard... Like a scar or a pinch that begs for a caress to relieve it. An itch under your skin or a memory fading before your eyes.

The faint sound of your MID has grown unreasonably loud. In the back of your mind, you know what it means, but you're too lethargic to attend to its warning. Where once you believed Hyacintho to be absent of life, it is now overrun. Falling back to the safety of the ship is now much too difficult to do quickly. Your limbs are heavy, the natives' faces blurry and unrecognizable as if they're a great distance away, but you swear you can feel them breathing on your neck, dragging their hands down your arms and back. You struggle, falling over yourself and are swayed by the delusions you are rapidly succumbing to. Yet, somehow, the Moira is just ahead. Within reach. Are you at the door now? Are your friends with you to drag you inside? Are they even calling to you?

You ask yourself why you're breathing so heavily.

You aren't.

( Excuse you, small twerp who isn't his cousin and therefore not subject to Ivan's depths of generosity. )

I've got my own, it's my drink I want back.

[personal profile] meyneth 2015-08-11 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
[His interest in her is... getting a bit more obvious now, between the way he is getting closer and closer and the odd self-introduction. Maybe he is trying to pick her up. Oh, she hopes not.]

I'm Fiora. No titles to worry about.

[Maybe Loki should just sit already. She gestures to one of the chairs next to her with one hand, the blocky golden segments of each metal finger shining in the fluorescent light above.]

Sort of a private question, don't you think? [a teasing smile pulls at the corners of her mouth.] I just came for a check-up. I guess I didn't have anything better to do.
definingfuture: (Tony - I've got a great idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Loki should always expect Avengers. Avengers are exactly where people don't want them to be. It's practically part of their method by now. Showing up to interrupt plans. He's a little lucky that it's Tony and not Steve waltzing in on him.]

I don't know. I'm pretty sure the food they served was part of a practical joke.

[He's not pulling out the guns just yet. Although that might be because Tony knows firing on board a ship can do more damage to the ship than anything, and he doesn't want that. He's not thrilled to have run into Loki, but at the moment there are other problems to worry about.]

How did you get here? Don't tell me their portal actually managed to pull you in?

[Okay, yes, it is kind of funny if that is what happened. Tech: 1, Gods: 0?]
definingfuture: (T - I'm always telling the truth.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thruster malfunction?

[They're tiptoeing, almost daring each other to be the one to burst the bubble first. Tony realizes he could just be upfront and ask if it had something to do with an armor issue, because it probably did, but part of him doesn't want to be the first one to point out the obvious.

Hi, nice face. Where'd you get it?

That just sounds awkward in his mind. But the other Tony is more aggressive, it seems, and goes right to the point. Again, without calling him out by name. Well, then.]

They've always been blue. I think they're one of my nicer features.

[He can't help but smirk as he says that.]

Between you and me, I think we'd end up dismantling the whole thing, which is probably why it's under restricted access. Of course they don't want to let us look at it. I wouldn't want us to look at it. We're probably upsetting some kind of balance just by standing near it.
definingfuture: (T - And what did I do this time?)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like surprises.

[That's a half-truth. He likes some surprises. The kind that work in his favor. But there is something in the way Miles says that which gets Tony's attention. He's got a casual calm to him that doesn't quite match what Tony knows of mercenaries. A smooth sort of confidence that isn't sitting on the edge of a knife. It's more methodical, in the language he speaks himself.

He wants to know what kind of things Miles has done.]

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. And your mother.

[He's genuinely sympathetic about that. He might put on a lot of fronts for the public, but Tony was never the type to wish anyone harm. This sort of thing is what he works to prevent and fix. All of those experiments with advanced technology are for improving daily life for everyone. He's already surprised by how calm Miles is when he relates his story, though.]

But those treatments must have been costly. Is that why...?

[Is it rude to ask a man why he joined a mercenary ship? Oops.]
definingfuture: (Default - I never sleep.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh-huh."

So he's basically making his own personal toy, which is probably a weapon. That's not sketchy at all. Tony raises an eyebrow and makes no effort at all to hide the way he's judging what he's doing, hiding in the storage room like a thief. He moves forward to get a better look at the work Rocket is doing--part of him is actually curious--and see if he can make out how he's putting it together. He is, after all, familiar with weapons himself.

"Who says they won't find out? And I'm not so sure they're hiring us so much as abducting us. That's still up in the air as far as I'm concerned."
definingfuture: (T - And this fucking thing.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Tony wishes he had his armor at that moment. It would make escaping the volcano a hell of a lot easier. He feels naked without the metal to protect him. Yes, it is cheating, but without it he doesn't exactly have the advantages other heroes have. So Matt gets stuck with one of the less useful Avengers this time around. Sorry, Matt.]

Okay, okay. Don't trip.

[Which is the one thing he doesn't think Matt will actually do, but he's tense.]

We're going to have to go around. We have a detour up ahead. The ship is beyond that, but the ground ahead is unstable. We'd have to do some climbing.

[If Tony's going to lead Matt around, he needs to keep in contact with him. As much as he trusts Matt's ability to climb, the tremors are making it hard to keep on track.]

So much for just taking a look around.
definingfuture: (Tony -Oh precious you have no idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[The mention of an alliance Tony isn't familiar with isn't completely out of place. It's not like he has the connections to keep up with everything that goes on beyond the little blue planet he calls home. Tony has enough to worry about as it is. One thing he does know, though.]

We do have a way of making an impact. Maybe we've already made an impression and this is their way of putting us to good use.

[Is he being paranoid? Possibly, but he's been burned too many times to take accidents at face value without a good explanation.]
definingfuture: (T - Honestly you know I lie.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Tough break.

[So they were headed to Earth before he got pulled onto the Moira. Tony wonders if all of the other borrowed crew members are from Earth. They seem human and it would make sense if they were dealing primarily with humans as well. Whatever accidentally targeted them was probably programmed to find human targets within a certain region.]

Now, now. Just because things can get a little touchy sometimes doesn't mean we can't be neighborly.

[He says that as if he's never had a horrible encounter with a Kree or Skrull warrior, but the lack of fire is honestly welcome. And the ship does look surprisingly sparse for its size.]

You think they encountered trouble that the captains aren't telling us about.
definingfuture: (T - Just smile for the paparazzi dear.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Aw, come on, don't give him that look. Tony recognizes the scrutiny even though Samus doesn't precisely voice it. Maybe that says something about him.]

Probably, but I'm pretty sure if I ate anything I'd regret it now. The pancakes are green. Have you ever had green pancakes? Probably not, which means there has to be something wrong with them.

[See? He's using his self-preservation instinct.]

And you're right. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to find anything good planetside. But you can't guarantee that I won't. Who knows? Maybe they have a Starbucks.
definingfuture: (T - I'm still awake.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Tony is somewhere between admiration and disgust at the way Bucky just methodically works on his plate. He can appreciate that steady force of will that reminds him a lot of Steve when he's focused on something, but the mechanical motions implying that Bucky isn't enjoying the food any more than Tony is bothers him. Why force yourself to suffer through that sort of misery? He's already angry about the lack of water. Submitting to the awful food is just giving these people extra satisfaction.]

We're not in the army now. You don't have to eat it just because they put it in front of you.

[There's a hint of concern in his voice too. They're both here now and Tony feels almost obligated to look out for Bucky. Maybe it's from guilt or it's a response to the sympathy he's being offered, but he does want to help.]

You think they have any juice?
definingfuture: (T - And this fucking thing.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Tony was speaking up to help break the ice. After all, they are all stuck on the ship, so he might as well try to be friendly. He probably should have expected the recognition even in the far reaches of whatever space they ended up in, but he's still a little surprised to hear his own name spoken out loud. It gets a smile out of him, though. Everyone likes a little notice (as long as that notice is positive).]

I'll give you that. The galley looks like it's seen better days. Now I understand why the food is so... unique.

[There. He didn't say it was bad. Someone should give him a gold star for tact. He can still taste the gritty eggs.]

I hope they weren't aiming when they brought us here. I'm going to need to have a word with the captains.

[A younger hero is still young, and he does have a problem with picking people out of their roster. Tony tries to be an adult. At least sometimes.]
definingfuture: (T - Oh precious you have no idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Mental note: they've got something. Something big, and while Tony can speculate all day, he decides that it probably won't help at the moment. Instead, it's just good to know that he's experienced to some degree with the kind of technology they need. Of course he would be. He's-

Nope. Tony's just going to shove that uncomfortable reality aside for later too. Just for the moment, until he has a good plan to get them all home. Hey, his new friend might have the information that they need.]

I'm glad we agree. At least someone here knows the value of teamwork.

[He's going to try getting access to the Ingress anyway. Why not have a partner in crime for the job?]

What exactly is your field of experience? If you don't mind me asking.

[It's terrible and it's slowly ruining his favorite food, but at this point, at any point in his life really, his constant state of existence is misery anyway, like an old friend who never leaves your side.] Steve or Fury ever tell you the Bastogne story? The one about the cow. It was the first thing we'd all had in months that wasn't canned because we were in the middle of enemy territory with no dedicated supply line. This isn't all that different. [He takes another bite.] We're just waitin' on our cow in Bastogne.

[The lack of non-alcoholic liquid is definitely more of an issue. Bucky doesn't have a problem drinking, but he likes to be sharp, and dehydration is a concern if he lays off the booze. Not to mention Tony's problem.] We'll go stage an invasion on the kitchens, see what's around.

"Didn't I just say kidnapping or whatever? You hairless freaks got some crappy hearing." Says the talking raccoon. "So fine, they shouldn't have kidnapped me. You happy now?"

He doesn't comment yet to the implied threat that this guy might go get him in trouble for this. He's too stubborn to pack up and move-- and besides, he's freakin' bored, okay? He's going to finish this, at least.

[ A lot of the things she could say to him aren't positive, but Verity has never known Stark to lie, much, even on the news. One of the reasons for her registering back during the mess of the SRA was how overwhelming honest he was about tracking down powered people, and while that was scary at the time it was also the absolute truth. A lot of other people on the news lied through their teeth.

So she might feel a lot like a canary next to a lion, but she won't peck at him unnecessarily. Living with Loki teaches a person to pick their battles. Plus, her inner fifteen-year-old still thinks he's kind of cool. ]

I was mooching around in there alone and the floor started to play tricks on my mind, I guess. I thought I saw someone else.

[ Arms folding, she snorts softly as the topic shifts because she really can picture the captains agreeing to speak to him instead of, say, her. For various reasons, but mainly an unwillingness to have a living lie detector pick up on any bullshit they decided to spew. ]

Maybe you should be the captain.

[ It's not a malicious barb, merely a tease that isn't altogether unsure of itself. ]

He's not you, he's just a possibility and you're better than that cackling prick.

[ Her annoyance is more with herself for being pushed out and willingly going, too much information and lies clustering in her head at once when she was there before the older Loki and his revelations. Keeping one of his hands in hers, tight and frightened he'll vanish again, she nods to the bar. Time for alcohol, yes please, especially if he's going to be evasive. ]

I shouldn't have walked out. He told me everything you hadn't and I ... I needed some space. I shouldn't have left, I'm sorry.

[ The one thought she's been chewing over these past eight months, and the reason she rubs at her eyes now. ]

Dead battery. My heart almost couldn't take it. [He smirks, being just as evasive, but knowing the other Stark would catch the meaning. Or should. They couldn't be that different, right?] Fortunately, I've got the best team on earth, hands down. Don't tell them I admitted that. They're good about catching me when I fall.

[He scoffs teasingly and waves off the other Tony's claim.] Please. My brown eyes are irresistible.

[He does concede that they'd end up dismantling it with a hesitantly affirmative sound and a shrug.] I think we could get it right back into working order again. But... maybe it's for the best.

I'm just surprised it was daring enough to put two of us together on the same ship.

[This Tony is definitely a lot more aggressive and forward. Likely mouthier too.]

[ That ... looks like Stark, sounds like Stark, and if there's an Asgardian saying about quaking, flapping Stark-like ducks then Thor is running with it. The discrepancies are noticeable enough yet only speaking to the man himself will prove one way or another if he's right. ]

I fear a doctor would avail me nothing, were I to eat such poor fare as this. [ Who's that guy putting his tray of gross food and Mjolnir down on the table opposite Tony? This mountain as he takes a seat. ] The hospitality of our hosts is lacking in more than one area, sure enough.

I think I may have found him.

[ Too young, the horns are different as is the garb, but Thor knows Loki when he lands eyes on him. Confused as he is, he doesn't appear alarmed; if anything, his heart aches at the thought of his lost brother upon Svartalfheim's barren surface.

Cloaked in red and holding his hammer loosely to one side, Thor's eyes remain calmly on the Little Loki sat there chattering. ]

Have I not, brother?

[ Lightning crashes around Tony in a blitzing circle, driving back the shades with their haunting tones. As the flare dies down, a strong hand grips under Stark's armpit and hoists him up to wrap an arm around him and all but haul the man toward the ship. ]

I have heard the company you keep is fell, Stark, but this takes it too far.

[ The wry humour is murmured before Thor unceremoniously dumps Tony past the open hanger doors, punching in the security code to close the hold. It isn't until the docking bay is secure as he needn't prowl the last open crack that he paces back over and offers Tony a hand up. ]

Do not vomit on me. Please.

[ Up you come, bro. ]
narcissistictendencies: (Everything will never be okay.)

Re: D1

[personal profile] narcissistictendencies 2015-08-11 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
[The crash of lightning was enough to make Tony jump, but immediately recognised the careful control of the currents. The haunting figures disperse, but the panic remains as an irrational presence gripping his chest. Even as Thor grabs him and hauls him up and to safety, he still can't properly breathe. The humour, however, doesn't go unnoticed, drawing a breathless chuckle from the delirious billionaire.

He's dumped into the hanger bay, catching himself shakily on his hands and knees before shifting to sit and catch his breath. The alarm was still wailing with the frantic and irregular heartbeat accompanied by his other dangerously overstressed vitals, but is slowly calming down now that he's back on the Moira.]

What can I say? I attract all kinds. [He finally retorts and takes Thor's hand when it's offered, standing with Thor's assist. Then teases,] No guarantees.
[But once he's on his feet, he leans heavily against the nearest wall, legs feeling a tad on the jello-y side.]

Thanks. I had everything under control, but you know... [His tone was still teasing, because they both knew he didn't have everything under control.] What were they? They were there right? Or is something messing with my head again?
norse: so i listened uncertainly (it asked a crumb of me)

[personal profile] norse 2015-08-11 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ A hand claps Tony lightly (for an Asgardian, whoops) on the shoulder, propping him up helpfully with a clasp. Humour and misdirection is Tony's weapon almost as much as being the Silvertongue was Loki's, only Thor understands it better coming from his fellow Avenger. He might have used it the same way, if the situation were reversed, so he doesn't call him on his competence. ]

Not only your head. I saw them too, they attempted to conceal the truth of their mischief. Growing up with my brother taught me a few things about spells and enchantments, not least of all that what you are made to believe may not be as it seems.

[ If only he thought less of Loki's bravery on Svartalfheim. Glancing over a shoulder at the closed doors, he steps back. ]

They may have been shades or ghosts, doubtless some manner of creature that bodes ill for any who cross their path. This planet is a dark place.

[The clap makes him lurch slightly, his wobbly state doing nothing to help him against Thor's 'gentle' might. But Thor was subtly helping support him, so he didn't make too much of a fuss beyond muttering.] Yeah, okay. Thanks buddy. Still just human outside the armour. I know that's still hard to believe.

[But when Thor does speak, he pipes down and listens. There were serious matters to attend and those matters were looming just outside the lovely Moira's protective hull.]

I'm--I'm done with the mind games. Last time someone messed with my head I messed up big time. I know it's tempting, but I promise, it's not as fun as it looks to be in my head! [He rambled at the sealed doors, but he was just venting steam.] So, whatever it is, it got to you, too. You know, someone might wanna update the computer systems here, because it clearly stated that this planet was uninhabited. I demand a refund.

[He seriously needed access to a workshop.]

[personal profile] norse 2015-08-11 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The Avengers is not Thor's first rodeo working within a team. With Sif and the Warriors Three (and also Loki for many centuries) it became necessary to augment their tactics based on their enemies, whether Thor waded in with Mjolnir at the end or not. Getting to that point of triumph was always three-quarters of the battle and while Tony is every bit a capable warrior in the field it is not so this day; his experience with the Sokovian witch's powers was not a brief affair.

The venting is understandable. It also underlines Thor's decision to call the shots. ]

Your skills would better serve us this day if you were in your element, with sights and sounds at your fingertips across the broadest measure. [ Blond hair shifts as he shakes his head thoughtfully, thinking on his feet. ] Navigation will be flooded with bodies. The Tower may afford you more privacy to work and allow me to view such findings, as I would like to if you will allow me along.

[ Calling the shots, yes, but still keeping Tony in the game without condescension. It's simple geography, moving the genius to where he will benefit everyone (and steady himself) most of all, and Thor would do it for anyone on their team if they were rattled to the point of almost coming to a standstill after a fight. ]
