AUGUST TEST DRIVE MEME

ABOARD THE MOIRA

Whether adjusting to space travel has been difficult or not, there is always something to be done. From working to leisure, the Moira offers a multitude of opportunities to get to know your crewmates a bit better. Exploration of the ship is highly encouraged, but as another planet grows closer to being docked, things start to get a little hectic. You'll notice a slight change in the artificial gravity as the Moira is pulled into the planet's gravitational field; however, more noticeable changes can be found in the overall morale as you prepare to descend.

☄ on the aft:

Offering an unobstructed view, it's quite easy to see stars that are still light years away. Like your own personal observatory, things are relatively quiet since other members are busy. While visiting, your steps may feel lighter as the ship's gravity is affected most here, but don't worry! The barrier surrounding the aft will keep you from floating away. Take note: if you happen to find yourself alone, no matter how brief, you may hear a distant echo — like a voice calling to you. For the most part, it's harmless. However, those curious enough to attempt to heed those words may find themselves suddenly jettisoned into space through a momentary lapse in the Moira's safety systems.

Hopefully you're wearing your thermals! The MID relay will alert the ship of this emergency, but who knows how long it will take for someone to retrieve you.

☄ in the mess hall:

It's breakfast time! On the buffet lining the back wall, you'll find an assortment of hurriedly prepared foods, but it's not the rations you've been accustomed to since the last port. There are stacks of green pancakes that taste like stale yet metallic bread. Are those eggs? Yes. Do they taste good? Probably not. Since supplies are scarce, there isn't much else to eat. The water might seem a bit brown, but is that really water you're drinking? After a while, depending on how much you've drank, you start to feel lightheaded... That's some strong space liquor right there.

☄ on your own:

There are plenty of other communal areas on the ship to explore! Pick a place, and see where it takes you.

PLANET EXPLORATION

Welcome to Hyacintho!

WARNINGS for possible psychological trauma, suffocation, and hallucinations.

From the outside, Hyacintho appears to be devoid of natives. Its landscape is sparse of vegetation with many slow-flowing streams tinted a murky blue. Craggy rock formations jut up randomly from the ground, hinting at abrupt development and are razor-sharp to the touch. Upon further exploration, dome-like structures can be found and appear to be abandoned settlements. Some are smaller and clustered close to the ground while others are elevated and connected by swinging bridges. Watching your MID here is critical; it monitors atmospheric composition with steady beeps that signal hazardous conditions. Staying on Hyacintho's surface for extended periods of time is ill-advised.

☄ the dormant volcanoes:

Scoping Hyacintho's peculiar topography leads to the discovery of inactive volcanoes and lava tubes. Some are easily accessible while others take more effort to reach—it's a steep climb to the vent. The ground shifts under your feet and can make walking difficult. Yet, the closer you come to a particular one, you may notice subtle changes in temperature and the air smelling faintly of sulfur. Perhaps this planet isn't as latent as you first thought.

Around midday, vibrations are unexpectedly felt and whatever light from Hyacintho's suns is blotted out by ashy clouds the same color as the ground. Small pockets of blue lava seep from those sharp rock formations, and that light sulfuric smell has now become increasingly overwhelming. Time to make a quick escape back to the Moira!

☄ the delirium:

When something terrible happens, sometimes it leaves a trace, a wound that acts as a knot between two timelines. It's like an echo repeated over and over, waiting to be heard... Like a scar or a pinch that begs for a caress to relieve it. An itch under your skin or a memory fading before your eyes.

The faint sound of your MID has grown unreasonably loud. In the back of your mind, you know what it means, but you're too lethargic to attend to its warning. Where once you believed Hyacintho to be absent of life, it is now overrun. Falling back to the safety of the ship is now much too difficult to do quickly. Your limbs are heavy, the natives' faces blurry and unrecognizable as if they're a great distance away, but you swear you can feel them breathing on your neck, dragging their hands down your arms and back. You struggle, falling over yourself and are swayed by the delusions you are rapidly succumbing to. Yet, somehow, the Moira is just ahead. Within reach. Are you at the door now? Are your friends with you to drag you inside? Are they even calling to you?

You ask yourself why you're breathing so heavily.

You aren't.

That's not very encouraging. This isn't going to set the pace for the whole journey, is it? I'd like something edible at some point.

[Hah. So he's enjoying the whole misadventure too. Despite the discomfort he started with, Tony is starting to think he could like this guy. And he can't keep himself from looking a little smug when he gets that cocked eyebrow.]

Well, yeah, space, but I meant other than space.

[Who hasn't been off-planet? Tony is showing off just a little bit, but he's enjoying being the one with experience this time. If he were dealing with half of the people he usually does, they'd already know more about the trip than him.]

What about that portal they've got? Now that's impressive.
innovention: (014.)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-07 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Alright, this guy's cockiness? Is definitely something Howard can approve of. He can't say he'd react any differently, if he were on the other side of the experience divide. ]

The Ingress? Sure is. Reminds me a little of something I've got back home.

[ Not a portal, per se, but the rippling blue energy of the Ingress is more than a little reminiscent of the tesseract. He's only ever seen the cube as a power source, but if something like this could be tapped from it? Hell, he'd be turning physics on its head. ]

Too bad it's locked down. [ Like he isn't already trying to figure out a way to get in there. ] I'd love to see what makes it tick.
definingfuture: (Tony - I've got a great idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-07 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, really?

[Speaking of cocky. It's Tony's turn to look intrigued by the claim. So the people brought onto the Moira do have some experience with portals and other advanced technology. Maybe this isn't quite an accident after all.]

All a locked door takes is the right access.

[That statement might rub people the wrong way, so Tony follows it up with a clarifying:]

They need our help. I'm sure once we all get to know each other we can work something out.

[See, that sounds legitimate. It certainly doesn't sound like he's planning on eventually finding a way to the Ingress himself. Although there's a little spark of excitement in his eyes that he's only just keeping hidden by the front. For someone perceptive, the idea probably doesn't get covered up quite as well as he intends it to be.]
innovention: (004. i'm a goddamned patriot)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-07 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hah. Howard's not fooled - he recognizes the look and the bland promise of cooperation. ]

Yeah. Smaller than what they've got, and solid-- [ He gestures quickly, hands a few inches apart. ] --but it packs a hell of a punch. Nazis didn't even know what they had.

[ It's a thrill, being able to talk about these things with someone who seems to get it. And as long as the tesseract stays were it's at - well-guarded and well-hidden - there's no harm in talking about it here. ]

If they've got something similar here, then I get why they'd keep it under lock and key. [ But-- ] Doesn't mean they shouldn't accept some friendly help.
definingfuture: (T - Oh precious you have no idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Mental note: they've got something. Something big, and while Tony can speculate all day, he decides that it probably won't help at the moment. Instead, it's just good to know that he's experienced to some degree with the kind of technology they need. Of course he would be. He's-

Nope. Tony's just going to shove that uncomfortable reality aside for later too. Just for the moment, until he has a good plan to get them all home. Hey, his new friend might have the information that they need.]

I'm glad we agree. At least someone here knows the value of teamwork.

[He's going to try getting access to the Ingress anyway. Why not have a partner in crime for the job?]

What exactly is your field of experience? If you don't mind me asking.
innovention: (004. i'm a goddamned patriot)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-11 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, modestly, I'm the best mechanical engineer in America. [ Coming from Howard, that's as modest as it gets. If the easy, shameless grin on his face is any indication, he knows it, too. ] The SSR gets all their toys from me - and believe me, coming out the the war we just had? Anything worth having is mine.

We may not have spaceships-- [ He gestures to the ship around them, broadly. ] But give me a week or so to get up to speed.

[ A week to catch up on over a century's worth of technological advancement? It's either arrogance or confidence or, most likely, some insane combination of both.]
definingfuture: (T - I'm measuring God.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Tony has to resist pursing his lips at that claim. Not because he doesn't believe it. He does and he has to hold back a wry smile at the confidence in the other man's answer. It's a little too close to home.]

A week? Do you want me to give you a hand? I've been in a few ships before.

[He's torn between feeling smug that he has a natural advantage and a bit humbled by the way Howard simply adapts to everything he's presented with. It takes a certain kind of person to never bow before the odds. His own memories had presented a different image. This? This is almost nice.]
innovention: (001. all that stark charm)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-13 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[ This Howard clawed his way out of a Lower East Side tenement building and into his millions - by comparison, a ship straight out of Amazing Stories somehow seems much less daunting. They're only a few years from manned spaceflight, anyway, and he intends to be have a hand in that, too. This? This is just a preview.

The jibe earns a good-natured snort. Ruffling his feathers takes a lot more than that, kid. ]
Oh, sure. I'd never turn down a competent lab partner.

[ He offers a hand. ] Howard Stark.
definingfuture: (T - I'm always telling the truth.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[He knew it was coming eventually. Tony's proud of himself for not losing his calm expression when he hears that name, but that's only because he's well-practiced. He keeps his smile and shakes the offered hand, standing just a bit taller as he does.]

So I wasn't wrong. I have to say, I'm kind of surprised. You'll have to forgive me for not having a lot to say. I never thought I'd be meeting you like this, Mr. Stark.

[And doesn't that feel weird to say? He's grasping at ideas for deflecting the inevitable topic that they're going to have to address.]

Technically I'm from the future, but I'm familiar with your name.
innovention: (015.)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-13 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Aw, don't get all formal and serious on him now, science buddy, you'll make him feel old. Howard makes a face and waves his hand, dismissive. ]

You don't work for me, pal. It's Howard.

[ Still, it's nice to know that he's still got some pull in the future. Unless... ] Hopefully because of something other than the society pages, right? [ A pause - sorry you've got to learn about your alternate-universe father's wild youth this way, Tony - and then continues. ] Just how far in the future are we talking, here?

[ Because he is shamelessly intending to pump you for information - comes with being a futurist, and all. ]
definingfuture: (T - Oh precious you have no idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-14 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Even though he knows the truth now, Tony can't help but feel some appreciation for the man. He had been expecting this meeting to result in a fight or at least bring forward his resentment toward Howard, but he finds himself liking him. Granted, Howard doesn't know who he is, but Tony can't help smiling a little at the way he just takes everything in stride.]

You're a household name. At least in my time.

[The hesitation actually makes him feel a little bit better about his own past escapades, so there's that. It's still weird to think that Howard was like that in the past, but it does make sense. Some things are genetic.]

We're friends with Germany and Russia. At least as much as politics will allow. Everyone survived the new millennium so far and innovation has us in space.

[The short version of an update from the future. Things he doesn't think will hurt space-time too much.]
innovention: (016.)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-14 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Post-2000, then. (And isn't that crazy?) Howard rocks a bit on his heels, slipping his hands in his pockets. The Germans... well, he can see that, kind of. He probably wouldn't have gone so far as to predict being friends, but there's over half a century for things to evolve that way.

The Ruskies, though... that's different. ]
Friends with the Soviets? Gotta admit, I'm having a hard time buying that one.

[ Chalk it up to a fundamental difference of opinion. (Or, more accurately, that there were more than a few people in Russia who truly hated Howard Stark, quintessential capitalist and weapons maker. He can't even blame some of them. ]

How about you? Got a name I can call you by?
definingfuture: (Tony -Oh precious you have no idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-18 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the future. We're supposed to surprise you.

[He's smug as he says that. Tony can't help getting a bit of personal satisfaction out of this meeting. It's something he has imagined before--just in daydreams--but now that he has the chance he feels the familiar pressure to perform.]

I think I can do better than give you the highlights of foreign politics, anyway. My name's Tony and I happen to be an inventor myself.

[He's bound to find out eventually, but for the moment Tony can at least take some satisfaction in making an impression without revealing the truth. He calls a gauntlet from its hiding place and the red piece of armor flies on automated jets to his hand, slipping on his hand and locking into place while he watches.]

In a way, you were my inspiration.
innovention: (001. all that stark charm)

[personal profile] innovention 2015-08-18 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's like waving candy in front of a kid: Howard immediately leans forward a little, eyes bright with interest. He's seen a lot of crazy things before - most of which were his own doing - but this is something new, and fascinating. ]

Autonomous guidance? [ Can't be radio, the precision is too fine. Hell, the propulsion, the mechanics, all it is too fine for his time. The future must be something else. ] I'd say it looks heavy as hell, but I'm betting you're playing with metals a lot more fun than just regular steel. [ He pauses, then takes a stab in the dark. ] Something out of Wakanda, maybe?

[ The showmanship is warranted, Howard'll give him that. He does, however, look pleased as Punch at the idea of being an inspiration. If he's giving the world something beyond bombs, maybe all the weapons will be worth it. ]

Yeah? Good. World could use more engineers.
definingfuture: (Tony - I've got a great idea.)

[personal profile] definingfuture 2015-08-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay, yeah, he's smug. He's showing off his creation to dad (not technically dad, but it still counts) and this might be the only time he manages to impress the man, so he's going to take the opportunity while he has it. Lord knows it won't last.]

Actually it's mostly a gold compound with some additional shielding. The circuitry is built in and the control... Well, that's more complex.

[He's not ready to explain Extremis. But that doesn't mean he can't give Howard a brief summary.]

We do. More so now than ever. It turns out we're kind of behind on advancements compared to everyone else. But we have our moments.
