leavin’ on a jet plane
"Don’t know when I’ll be back again."

ABOARD THE MOIRA
The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

Whether adjusting to space travel has been difficult or not, there is always something to be done. From working to leisure, the Moira offers a multitude of opportunities to get to know your crewmates a bit better. Exploration of the ship is highly encouraged. You may notice a slight change in the artificial gravity every once in awhile; however, more noticeable changes can be found in overall morale of those of the crew.

☄ on your own

There are plenty of other communal areas on the ship to explore! Pick a place, and see where it takes you. ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

The day begins normally. Or almost.

The Moira has accidentally fallen along the trajectory of an asteroid barreling its way through space. While most things like this are not uncommon, and the ship is far from any potential danger of collision or risk of debris damaging the exterior, there is something particularly odd about this specific occurrence. The rock itself appears to give off a strange light that is both eerie and alive. Often, if looked at in just the right manner, it will shift colors; so, while one person sees one side of the spectrum, someone else could see something entirely different. At first, things continue on as they usually do aside from the glowing asteroid alongside the Moira, but as the hours go on, that does not seem to be the case.

☄ the hours are breathing
resignedly beneath the sky the melancholy waters lie
With a rather open view of stars and space, thanks to the skylight above, the pool in the rec area suddenly comes alive beneath the light of the asteroid filtering in. Perhaps it’s some natural response to the chemical composition of the water, or perhaps it’s magic. Yet, regardless of the explanation, those who happen to take a dip suddenly find themselves plagued by despair. The depression and melancholy are not subtle changes either; it slams into you with great force, like a punch to the gut. The longer you remain in the pool, the deeper it grows, like an all-consuming paranoia that settles into the back of your mind and causes your heart to grow heavy. These strong feelings will eventually fade if you choose to leave the pool and dry off, but as long as you remain damp from the pool, those emotions will continue to linger. Even after you’re completely dry, there will be no mistaking just how intensely you felt or why. There is no explanation and might not be. Would you dare a second swim to test whether or not it was a fluke? ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

☄ those who have crossed
the eyes are not here, there are no eyes here
The walls are shrinking in. Every room you step into feels much too small, like there isn’t enough room to even breathe. A crowded place becomes startlingly empty, and no matter how much you run, how much you explore, there is no one there to comfort you or answer your calls for help. Hallucinations run strong between the lulls of obscene loneliness or claustrophobia, and exposure to the glow of the asteroid is really the only thing to thank for that. You’re desperate to claw your way out of the ship—open the emergency hatch in the Cargo Bay, bust the glass of the Observation Deck. What’s worse is that it’s not just you. It’s catching, and the fear of being next is very real. It feels like you’re being watched, that everyone around you is looking and seeing everything you are. Or are not. The only way to make it stop is to admit that you’re afraid of being seen, but who, in the deep madness of the self, has the courage to ever admit the truth? ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

☄ the sun in flight
rage, rage against the dying of the light
Something has drifted its way onto the Moira from the outside. Unlike the faint luminosity they give off, they suck up all the light around them, making them the only source to see by. From far away, they are just flitting balls of light, but if you get close enough to inspect them, they are mean. And have sharp, sharp teeth. Go poking, and they will bite you before trying to fly away while taking that only light source with them. The option to avoid them is quite easy if you’re not the curious sort, but without them around, it will be impossibly dark. As the asteroid moves on in the opposite direction of the Moira, these light creatures begin to dissolve and fade away with it. However, a word of caution: their bites glow. If you don’t manage to find the one that bit you and capture it between your hands, the bite will become a permanent glowing fixture of your body. ( These scenarios can be used as in-game canon. )

[ Some things might feel like old hat to other people, but being kidnapped and whisked off into space through a weird portal-y thingy wasn't exactly on her bucket list. She'd made her way to the observation deck to try and make out at least one familiar constellation or some space bullshit that was way more up Jane's alley than her own and oh my god why is she evenbotheringtolookrightnow--

She takes a breath, and then another - letting her thoughts drift to home. To the last thing she'd remembered. Something had been wrong with Jane and Thor had whisked her away, leaving Darcy to deal with the cops. It was fine, she was used to it... Picking up pieces and making a few things up as she went. And right now, it looked like she might be on her own. There's a frustrated sound as she moves up to the window, eyes scanning again as she continues to look for something familiar. She presses a hand against the glass of the deck, murmuring to herself. ]

Toto, we aren't in London anymore.

[ Trouble seemed to always have a way of finding Darcy, or rather she had a keen way of finding it. Of course she'd tried to touch the glowing thing because Dory from Finding Nemo was kind of her spirit animal on Tuesdays, Fridays, and every other holiday. If it glowed or looked like it shouldn't be touched, she wanted to touch it. And just like with Dory, the stupid glowing thing was attached to teeth and the teeth hurt. She pulls her hand away from it, shaking the injured appendage before starting to move after the floating ball of light. She didn't have a fear of the dark, per se, but being trapped on a ship in space which was already pitch black screamed horror movie... And she was too awesome to go out like this. ]

Oh shiitake mushrooms on a panda... H-hey, come back Pluto! I'm sorry you're not a planet anymore!

[ As the creature moves further away from her, she notices the fact that the bite is glowing. The dim light coming from her forearm illuminates her face as she holds it closer for inspection, panic laced with a whole lotta concern shining in her eyes. Her voice is a little shaky as she looks around again, trying really hard to not have a meltdown. ]

I'm so boned.

The corridor is dark enough that trying to move through it without frightening anyone is a good idea, and as L approaches from behind the woman, he almost passes by her without comment. Then, as the glowing creature swims away from her and towards him, he catches a glimpse of the side of her face. Her identity registers on a subconscious, physiological level before he can even put a name to her, making his pulse pick up, making his stomach drop... but once he does, he realizes that he would have recognized her almost anywhere, and her voice confirms it. It's Darcy.

He steps into the creature's light, and its illumination sets off the contrast between his pale skin and dark hair, and is reflected in his pupils. He's a good eight inches taller than her.

"Wait. I'll catch it." His voice doesn't waver -- there's nothing that immediately betrays how rattled he is.

[OOC: I am so, so sorry. L's CRAU pull point is from about two days before getting into an intense long-term relationship with his previous game's Darcy, but well after developing feelings for her. You are not under any obligation to continue anything like that, of course: he'll get over it.]

[ ooc: no worries, sounds good to me - I'm open to him knowing things about her. It'll be nice to have a sort of insta friend of some sort, at least. ]

She's so caught up in what was going on, she'd barely noticed she wasn't alone any longer until a moment or two before he spoke. There's a pause before she speaks, brows still knit with worry. "It won't do us much good if we both get bitten by it." Not that she's doubting his abilities, but she doesn't know him and the last thing she really wants to do is rope someone else into this if it wasn't necessary.

This spaceship should only hold so many glowing people. Her arm falls to her side, lips quirking to the side. "I mean, unless you really want to - I can stay here and wait."

He half-smiles, a slight brightening of his flat expression.

"It's all right. I'm taller."

This kind of helpfulness isn't characteristic of him, per se, but Darcy is the sort of person who might bring it out even if he hadn't known her in another time and place. In this case, there are things he needs to know about how much she knows... whether or not she remembers anything he'd consider compromising. But the fact that he didn't see any recognition in her face just now, that she hasn't called him Zaki and didn't seem relieved to see him, suggests a number of answers already.

He moves slowly towards the shining creature, straightening his posture and craning his neck, but not yet lifting his arms. Then -- there! He grabs it.

It immediately bites the pad at the base of his thumb, then whooshes back off in Darcy's direction, much too high for either of them to reach.

"You have to be kidding me." That's not directed at her.

[Yay! I just don't want to weird you out too much with his existing crush on her. It's definitely fading by this point, but unless something major happened to change his general view of her, he'd always have at least an abstract fondness for her and an interest in her general well-being.]

[Most of the time Kazuhira's prosthetic leg fairs well. Today isn't one of those days. He's on his crutch again, keeping the bulk of his weight off of it to avoid more strain as he makes his way over to her.]

Don't worry, we have a good medical department.

[But that doesn't make being bitten by an unfamiliar creature less terrifying. Hell, he doesn't even know yet if a mild tourniquet would be in excess. He doesn't make the recommendation. Looks like she's panicked enough.]

[He's good enough at medicine himself that he can take a look, and he offers out his prosthetic hand. Strange and see-through. Not all that unlike the glass limbs people were so recently afflicted with, but with the added benefit that it's artificial nature keeps him safe from whatever glowing (potential) toxin this is.] Let me see. I have some training.

[ One of the perks of surviving people falling out of the sky and alien metal death monsters was not being phased by much anymore. The her two-ish years ago might've stared or kept up with the no filter game, just letting whatever came to mind sputter out... But today wasn't that day. Perks of the beginning fringes of shock because seriously wtf was all this. As much as she'd like to not worry, it's really hard right now. One of those things that's easier said than done, especially given her default settings of already being wound up.

She holds out her arm when requested, letting her gaze settle on the glowing bite on her forearm, her other hand moving to toy with the scarf still around her neck. ]

I didn't think my first few weeks aboard would be quite so banana balls.

[What?]

It um... gets banana balls pretty regularly.

[In his serious voice, bordering on formal but definitely all business, that's one of the more ridiculous things that could come out of it. But he seems to be satisfied.] You don't seem to be having an immediate allergic reaction to it, but lets get you to Med Bay to be sure. I'll show you where it is.

[He gestures towards the lift, but keeps his eye on those drifting things, Good thing if he uses his right hand, he can't get bitten.]

observation deck

[personal profile] gladiumetscutum 2016-07-10 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
That we aren't.

[ The voice doesn't come from one particular spot on the deck, rather over the comms system throughout. Cortana's keeping an eye on the new arrivals where she can, using the cameras throughout the ship to do so. Most of the time, they have no trouble running in to other members of the crew to help them figure things out, but the odd one does stray off on their own, and those are the ones who particularly hold her interest. Mostly because without running in to someone else, at least she can be there to offer them some help where they need it. Best to get them up to date and relatively comfortable as soon as possible, right?

So, of course, hearing Darcy speak to herself while staring out at the stars, the AI sees this as a good time to step in and offer up the information she may not have received from the captains, or more in depth information than the captains bothered to offer. Basically, whatever she might need.

Before she continues, however, knowing how humans tend to prefer actually seeing who they're talking to, she projects a hologram into the room. It's small and blue, translucent with lines of code running up along it, but the figure is very clearly that of a woman. ]

Not even the same universe as London, I'm afraid.
sorryitasedyou: (I hate to break it to you)

[personal profile] sorryitasedyou 2016-07-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, that's new.

Eyes quickly shoot over her shoulder before she spins in a bit of a circle trying to find the source. It takes a moment but she figures it out, looking up in no particular direction. Today just kept getting weirder and weirder. She wasn't exactly versed on courtesies when speaking to a voice rather than a person physically in the room attached to it, although the idea of winging it quickly gets shot down with the projection. Okay, really cool but still a little bonkers.

She could totally be smooth right now and roll with it like it's nothing. She's totally not standing there staring at the projection with a slightly slack jaw watching the code because what. ]

That explains why I can't recognize anything out there.

[ Not... that she was really expecting to anyways. Stare long enough and everything starts to form the big dipper or other random shapes that were close to constellations from home. ]
gladiumetscutum: (pic#10278059)

[personal profile] gladiumetscutum 2016-07-18 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ Honestly, Cortana just takes the staring in stride. She's used to it by now, given a fair number of people on the ship aren't familiar with AIs, or aren't familiar with AIs that are like her. All she does is offer a friendly smile and a glance toward the observation window with a nod that's quickly followed by a small shrug. ]

That would, yes. Though I'm under the impression that you've not had much experience in space even in your own universe, so even there it seems unlikely you might recognize some of he sights.

[ Gaze returning to the woman before her, her smile remains, conveying that she doesn't mean what she said as an insult so much as a statement of fact. ]

You haven't spoken much with anyone yet, have you? You're new, but don't have much of an idea of what's going on?

[ She makes it sound like a guess despite knowing that she's right. It unsettles people when you know things like that about them, or if they know you've been watching them. Particularly those people unfamiliar with AIs and suddenly finding themselves in new surroundings. Much better to play it off as making an educated guess than known fact. ]
