SHADY CHARACTERS ASSEMBLE

With Arc II about to begin and the crew members having to find new lines of work, a few of us thought it might be useful for those with characters who are likely to get involved in shady/less-than-legal business to have a place to exchange information. Basically, the planets might be big but the underworld is probably somewhat smaller.

So! If it applies to your character, reply to this post with what brand of shadiness they're going to be into, any moral restrictions they have, and anything else you want to share. Possibly we can make connections between characters who don't already have them, as shady peers or connections. Not so much plotting as pre-plotting.

Nathan Drake

Between the treasure hunting gigs back home, Nate paid the bills as a thief for hire. He's very good at breaking into places and getting away clean, despite having zero lockpicking skills, and works well as part of a team. He will not kill someone to get the job done (unless they're going to kill him first), but his clients don't need to be squeaky clean people. Obviously.

Marian Hawke

Hawke acts as a mercenary for hire that's often not smart enough to ask for half upfront (or maybe she's bored and just wants an excuse to get into trouble). Hawke does anything from finding lost kids, to saving people trapped in caves, to clearing monsters out of areas, to straight up murdering people that she agrees are indeed assholes who need to die. Hawke avoids harming kids and animals but doesn't seem super concerned about seriously harming or injuring assholes. ALSO SHE'S NOT AT ALL SUBTLE OR COVERT.

Adrien is Nate's #1 choice for shady doctors. He figures listening to any lectures the doc wants to give is part of the payment.

River Tam

River has a transport ship called The Lantern and a lot of experience in doing occasionally less-than-legal smuggling jobs. She's likely to fall back on this and will definitely be looking to pick up some reliable ruffians to help out with things. Anyone who signs on is welcome to live on the Lantern if they'd like. SHE WILL DEFINITELY BE ADVERTISING THAT SHE'S HIRING

caveat: she is a psychic shit and your character will have to be comfortable with her possibly picking up surface thoughts

It's canon for him to set up his own network of people to pass on information/spy on shit that may seem out of the ordinary or detrimental to the people. He has plans of eventually building his own place on one of the two planets (provided the worlds don't go to shit before that), but he's also incredibly handy in being subtle with information, passing things along to other persons, and also good at avoiding questions about himself.

If anyone is in need of someone to act as a median for information or chat with him about subtle shit or just be like HEY CAN WE TALK he'll easily help where he can!

If I read right it sounds like J and Arno are somewhat up for same kind of business. Dealing with information and linking the right people together? Maybe we could do something together (not necessarily having them work together) since this smells like nice cr.

Harry Flynn

Flynn's a thief and treasure hunter but honestly mostly the former. You'll want him on your team as a lockpick, lookout, and someone who plans ahead for what could go wrong.

As for doing the heavy lifting during the heist ... well, ok he'll do it if he must. Which is to say he can be rather lazy and apathetic but eh. He'll still get the job done, but he'll complain about it the whole way.

Has no compunction about offing someone and/or betraying them if he finds it to be in his best interests (which to be clear: he won't turn on people willy-nilly for the sake of being a turncoat; if it happens there will be a reason).

Also fun at parties.

So, as some of you might remember, J was one of the founders for the semi secret speakeasy on Moira. And you bet she's into more shady business. I have my plans pretty much all over the place but here's some:

A CLUB. That's where the activity is going to take place. In canon J used to be club singer although it's hinted she did more background work for it than she was given credit. So instead of selling just beer, she's looking for a place where she can start performing again. This would mean that there's plenty of jobs for other characters if anyone's interested/looking for some.

But behind the closed doors/under the counter, she'd be selling stolen goods (and maybe drugs? she still got plenty and wants to get rid of them). Overall, I'd like her to be a dealer of some sorts? Someone that people can bring their treasures/hauls and she'll trade them for something else and sell forward etc. Also, she made her business to keep tabs on people when they were still on Moira (her official position was Personnel officer) so I'd like to put that use and have her work as middleman when it comes to looking for right people. Example; person x needs a thing and j tells them to go to y.

Kavinsky will be here for booze/counterfeit object/etc. creation!! In exchange for dubious favors. I reckon he can make anything from cars to fake, non-functioning Ingress parts, exotic pets, etc. He'll definitely want something to keep him busy whenever he isn't boiling over hatred and interpersonal problems.

ANYHOW this is a great idea as per usual. Both great ideas. Hope we can get some CR out of it.

They're going to be living with Frisk and Asriel so they need a job with some steadiness to it. They've got very few moral restrictions - merc work, theft, trade, security work, whatever needs doing, they'll do it. Only limitations is that, for all their posturing and mature outlook they're like ten. Good at killing, but like ten.

I HONESTLY THINK ZEVRAN AND ARNO WOULD BE GREAT BUDDIES/ALLIES TBH

Arno's in need of making allies for whatever the fuck is gonna head their way with settling, and he himself is an assassin (different from a Crow tbh) and deals a lot with espionage, information passing, and courier shit that more often than not involves stealing a thing. I feel like it could be some really great CR.

Nate almost graduated as a mercenary for hire from a merc school which would take missions including thievery, clearing out monsters, security detail, animal population surveys, tech maintenance, financial and legal assessment, peacekeeping, diplomacy, and saving the world. The only one of these past the first three or four that he's had experience in is saving the world. Mostly he's interested in stealing Historic and/or Otherwise Cool Shit or, lowkey, helping folks out. Quietly has qualms about killing people :')

Varric Tethras

In the words of a certain raven-haired woman, he'll do anything so long as it doesn't involve animals or small children. That said, he's got a pretty solid moral code, so he won't be horribly underhanded or stepping on the little people.

He's a chaotic good, Robin Hood-y type, you know?

His specialties are telling clever lies and managing lowkey spy networks, with various assortments of other fun mercenary work in the middle.

If Varric is looking for someone to kind of ally/share spy stuff with, Arno's planning on setting up his own network to gather info and pass it along to interested parties on certain subjects.

Also, he feels that Robin-Hood type; Arno is very much one himself and really enjoys helping people out from the background where he can. I think they'd definitely have some great CR.

Chloe Frazer

Chloe markets herself as the best driver in the business, but is no slouch at getting her hands dirty on the thievery side of things. Breaking and entering? You'll need a lock picker. Chloe can do that (thank you Lost Legacy Trailer). Works well with others as long as she gets what she wants out of it and she likes who she's working with.

Serbian warlords need not apply.

Rinzler

While he's not likely to dive headfirst into the underworld, Rinzler can be nudged that way without too much work. He doesn't recognize the system authorities, and considers it important to prepare for their inevitable failure. This means a willingness to work with others who distrust the savrii and their system, and morals certainly won't hold him back.

Skill-wise, he's a highly capable tracker, bodyguard, and pilot, and an absolutely flawless killer. While Rinzler has relatively few scruples, he does require a reason to pursue a target-- and generally, he won't care either way about cash. On the Moira, he led the transporter crew, and he still has a small squadron of starships in personal storage.

Reaper

Reaper has done just about every bad business in the book. Murder, theft, information extraction -- he's capital "P" Professional when it comes to spec ops, and he can turn into a ghost to boot. Bad news is that he kind of has a reputation for brutality, and is probably only your choice if you don't mind someone getting their neck snapped along the way.
